Thenervoussystemwillendthesemester.Theendocrinesystemwillstartoffthenextsemester, followedbycardiovascular,immune,respiratory,excretoryandreproductivesystems.You’llfind thateverythingisinterrelatedandthatyoucan’tforgetwhatyoulearnedthissemesterbecause you’llbeusingitinthesecondsemester. Pre‐requisites:BSC2010&2010L,BSC2011&2011L,CHM2100&2011L. RequiredMaterials: AcoursepackisavailableattheUSFbookstoreandincludesallofthefollowing,required materials.Ifnotgoingthroughthebookstoreyouwillneedtoobtainthefollowing: 1.) Textbook HumanAnatomyandPhysiology:byMariebandHoehn.10thEditionorhigher. 2.) LabManual HumanAnatomyandPhysiologyLabManual(catedition)byMariebandMitchell. 10thEditionandupareallsuitableforuseinthelab*. *Makesurechapterworksheetsareunmarkedifbuyingused! Studentsshouldreadthetextandkeepupwiththematerialasitispresentedinlecture.You shouldreadtopicstobepresentedinlecturepriortoattending.Lecturetopicsarepresentedin the same order as topics in the text, which makes reading ahead fairlystraightforward. IT IS CRUCIALTHATYOUKEEPUPWITHTHEMATERIAL! Inadditiontheremaybesupplementalmaterialincludedinlecturefromtimetotimeontopics notfoundinthetextwhichyouwillberesponsiblefor. TheFirstWeek:Studentsmustcompletethefirstweekassignment(TBAinlecture)onCanvasby Wednesdayofthefirstweekofclasstoretaintheirseatintheclass.Thiscanbedonefromhome orfromacomputerlaboncampus. Lectures&Attendance Attendanceandparticipationinthelectureisnotrequired,butisstronglyrecommendedifyou intendtodowellinthiscourse.MyselfandthelectureTAwillbeavailablebothinofficehours andinlectureperiodstoassistyouinlearningthematerial.Wewillbedoingsomeactivitiesin class that go beyond traditional lecture that are intended to enhance your familiarity and understanding of the material. These will only be offered during the period, and no online supplementwillbeavailable. Canvas Canvasisusedtopostclarifications,instructionsandothermaterialrelevanttoclass.Makesure tocheckitdaily,andalwaysbeforeclass.
Grading Yourgradeinthiscoursewillbeacombinationofyourlecturegrade(60%)andyourlaboratory grade(40%).Gradeswillbeassessedasapercentageof1,000totalpoints.Therewillbe4lecture examsand a comprehensivefinal exam. Eachexam will beworth 150 points,and the lowest examgradewillbedropped.Thiswillcompriseupto600pointsofthe1,000totalpointsforthe course.Ifastudentmissesanexamforanynon‐excusedreason,thatgradewillbedropped.If astudentmissesmorethanoneexamforanynon‐excusedreason,thefirstmissedexamwillbe dropped,andallothermissedexamswillresultina0.Makeupexamswillbeofferedifyouhave auniversityapprovedreasonandcontactmewithinaweekofmissingtheexam. GradeswillbeavailablethroughCanvasonly,andwillnotbegivenoutoverthephone,inperson, orthroughemail.Youhaveuptotwoweekstodisputeagradeafterithasbeenposted,after that the grade is finalized. This goes for exams, quizzes, and lab practicals. Incomplete grades, I, are given at the discretion of the instructor and only for the reasons outlinedintheUSFstudenthandbook;forexample,theyarenotgivenbecauseastudentisdoing poorlyormissesmorethanoneoftheexams.Igradesmaybeawardedonlywhenasmallportion oftherequiredworkisincompleteandwhenthestudentotherwiseisearningapassinggrade(C orbetter),andwiththeunderstandingthatnofurtherinstructionisrequiredtochangeanIgrade. Anincompletegradecontract,whichstatesthenatureoftheincompleteworkandthedeadline for its completion, must be signed before final grades are due. ExamProtocol:Whenturninginexams,studentsMUSTshowtheirUSFStudentIDs.Ifastudent doesnothavetheirStudentID,theexamwillbeaccepted,butthestudentwillreceiveazero. Studentswholeavetheroomforanyreasonaftertheexamhasbegunwillberequiredtoturnin theirexamandwillnotbepermittedtocontinuetakingtheexam.Lectureexamswillbeginat 2:00pmsharp,thusyoushouldplanonarriving15minutesBEFOREthestartoftheexamto allowadequatetimetobeseatedandhandoutexams.Studentswillnotbepermittedtotake theexamafterthefirstexamhasbeenhandedin.Inaddition,nohatsorsunglassesmaybe worn,andNOelectronicdevicesarepermittedduringtheexam.Youarepermittedtobringa wristwatch,butofficialtimewillbekeptbytheinstructor.Academicmisconduct(below)during examsmaybemonitoredbyusevideorecording,atthediscretionoftheinstructor. AcademicMisconduct Zerotolerance–anycheatingorplagiarismdiscoveredwillbedealtwithaccordingtoUniversity and Department policy, no exceptions. EmergencyPreparedness Intheeventofanemergency,itmaybenecessaryforUSFtosuspendnormaloperations.During thistime,USFmayopttocontinuedeliveryofinstructionthroughmethodsthatincludebutare not limited to: Canvas, Skype, and email messaging and/or an alternate schedule. It’s the responsibilityofthestudenttomonitorCanvasforeachclassforcoursespecificcommunication, andthemainUSF,College,anddepartmentwebsites,emails,andMoBullmessagesforimportant generalinformation. DisruptionoftheAcademicProcess Students are expected to show proper respect for the Instructor and for other students. Punishment will be imposed for disruption of academic process of any kind. ‘Disruption of
academicprocess’isdefinedbytheUniversityasanact,words,orgeneralconductofastudent in a classroom or other academic environment which in the reasonable estimation of the Instructor: (1) directs attention from the academic matter at hand (e.g., noisy distractions; persistent,disrespectfulorabusivedisruptionsoflecture,exam,oracademicdiscussions)or(2) presentsadangertothehealth,safety,orwellbeingofselforotherpersons.Studentscoming toclasslateorleavingclassearlycanbeadisruptionofacademicprocessandcanbedealtwith accordingly. MaterialsRequired– AnatomyandPhysiologytextbook(forreferenceinlab) HumanAnatomyandPhysiologyLabManual(catedition)byMariebandMitchell SafetyGoggles Dissectionkit(optional) LabCoat(recommended) LaboratoryParticipation Policy– Severalcoursesin theDepartment ofBiology (includingthis one)requiretheuse,manipulation,oreuthanasiaofliveanimalsortheuseofpreservedanimals as an indispensable part of the laboratory exercises. By enrolling in these courses, a student agreestoparticipateinthelaboratoryexperimentsthatutilizeliveordeadanimals.Althougha studentwhoobjectsonthebasisofreligiousormoralgroundsneednotparticipatedirectlyin theeuthanasiaordissectionoftissues,thestudentisexpectedtoparticipateindatacollection, writelabreports,andtakequizzesandexamsusingdissectedanimals.Failuretoparticipatewill haveanegativeimpactonthefinalgradeinthecourse.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytobring up and concerns to the faculty member in charge by the completion of the first laboratory session.AllprotocolsfortheuseofanimalsintheDepartmentofBiologyhavebeenapproved bytheUSFIACUCandadheretoStateandFederalregulations. Safety–Thefollowingrulesarestrictlyenforced: 1) Noeating,drinking,vaping,orsmokinginlab. 2) Cellphonesmustbeturnedofforputonsilentifusingtotakephotos. 3) Safetygogglesarerequiredduringdissections.Youwillbeaskedtoleaveandcounted absentwithoutthem. 4) Close‐toed (and closed‐heel) shoes are required. Shoes must be of a material that is durableenoughtoprotectthefootifascalpelorpairofscissorsisdropped.Thismeans theentirefootmustbecovered(i.e.tennisshoes).Youwillbecountedabsentandasked toleaveiffootwearisinappropriate 5) Shirtsmustcoverthechest,back,stomach,andshoulderscompletely.Longpantsorlong (ankle‐length) skirts are required.
