BULLYING AND A GIRL LIKE HER

Abstract This paper will be a movie review about a great movie titled “A Girl Like Her”. The movie is filmed in a documentary style and follows the life of a victim of bullying and the bully herself. The audience is able to see what it is like to be in the shoes of the victim, the victim’s family and friends, and the bully. This paper will also discuss the topic of bullying ad why everyone should stand up to a bully if they ever see it happening to themselves or anyone else. Bullying and A Girl Like Her Bullying is a very popular topic that has always been around. It ranges from people being bullied online to people being bullied in person leaving the victim feeling hopeless. Often times, especially in schools, bullying is something that happens to a lot of children and the staff at the school never seems to do anything about this which can lead to kids dropping out or even committing suicide. I believe this topic needs to be addressed and noticed by everyone because it is a topic that is pushed to the back of peoples minds even though it is so prominent in our society today. The movie I am reviewing is called “A Girl Like Her”. It is a documentary style movie about a girl named Jessica Burns who is bullied by a girl named Avery Keller, and the bullying leads to Jessica attempting suicide by swallowing an entire bottle of pills. Throughout the movie the audience sees how Jessica’s attempted suicide affects her parents and her best friend Brian. The main focus on a lot of the movie is surprisingly centered around the bully because the film crew gives her a camera of her own to record her daily life. She enjoys recording herself and all of her friends until one of the people from the film crew shows her a video compiled of

instances when she bullied Jessica that were secretly recorded on a pin she wore with a camera installed that Brian gave her. Avery instantly starts crying and apologizing because she never knew how much her bullying had affected Jessica’s life, and she knew that nothing she did would change the fact that Jessica may die in the hospital because of her. I would definitely recommend this movie to someone who was particularly interested in a movie on the topic of bullying, or to someone who wanted to watch a good drama film. This movie shows everyone’s emotions in depth as they are going through this hard time. For example, the movie periodically shows Jessica’s parents by her bedside at the hospital and also shows their emotions when her heart stops and the doctors try to revive her. On the other hand, not only do we get to see the effects on the victim’s family, but we also see how the bully is affected and how much she ends up regretting all those times she would bully Jessica for no reason. The audience is able to see the hardships in the bully’s life as well, which makes people realize that sometimes people are bullies because they are not happy with their own lives. This movie may have been fictional, but there is always someone in the world that is going through the same things that Jessica went through in this movie. Bullying is a huge social issue that often goes unnoticed by many people, and it something that so many people either go through or witness on a daily basis. Unfortunately, this movie shows the harsh reality of some American high schools as well as the reality of so many children all over the country. Any form of bullying needs to be put to an end, no matter if it is indirect on the internet or directly in person. There needs to be more rules and regulations put in place to keep this issue under control because “A Girl Like Her” is a movie that is very similar to reality and that is a shame.
