Description

BUSINESS 343 RESEARCH REQUIREMENT Quick Link: https://sfubeedie.sona-systems.com Background Much of what is taught in business schools is informed by academic research. Students at research-active schools tend to learn cutting-edge insights sooner, and accordingly the net present value of a business school degree is highly correlated with the research impact of the business school (indexed by number of publications, citations, and peer-ratings; see Armstrong 1995, Journal of Marketing). Many faculty members and Ph.D. students in our marketing area utilize experiments in their research. In order to expose you to behavioural science research, BUS 343 has a research participation component. This means you can participate in two marketing experiments (or equivalent, see below) this semester. You will earn a 0.5% bonus for each experiment, so you can earn up to 1% bonus. The experiments will be generally conducted in the Beedie Marketing Lab. Each experiment will last approximately 45 minutes. The schedule and availability of experiments will be posted online at https://sfubeedie.sona-systems.com Experiments will be posted periodically throughout the semester, so be sure to check the website often and sign up for one. As the sign-up system is managed centrally by the Research Participation Coordinator, Yunzhijun Yu. Your BUS343 TA’s or instructor may not be up-to-dated on which experiments are available for sign up. It is helpful that you check regularly starting in the beginning of July. The last date to participate in a research session is August 3, 2018.

It is very important that you arrive at your session at least 5 minutes before the scheduled starting time. If you’re late for your session, you will have to reschedule. If you must cancel your appointment, you must unregister from the website at least 24 hours in advance. You can contact your experimenter(s) if you have any questions regarding sessions scheduling. Alternative Arrangements Participation in all studies is completely voluntary. Students may also withdraw from any study, without penalty. If you would like to fulfill your research requirement, but do not wish to participate in any studies as a participant, you may do so by acting as an “observer.” Observers are simply shown what would have happened in the study had they actually participated, but in this case they would not provide any responses. If you want to act as an observer, sign up for the study you would like to observe. Then, when you arrive at the appointment for the study, simply tell the experimenter you would like to act as an observer. You will not complete any studies, but instead will write a short report (500 words) about what you observed and learned during the session. Obviously we would greatly appreciate having you participate fully as a participant, but it is important that all students have a legitimate opportunity to earn credit even if they really do not wish to act as a research participant. In the unlikely event that your schedule makes it impossible to complete an experiment, you have the option of completing an alternative assignment. This alternative assignment requires reading an academic marketing research article and writing a 500-word report summarizing and analyzing the article. Reports will be judged on a pass/fail basis. You should treat this option as an emergency backup. Discuss this option with your BUS343 instructor before the 11th week of class if it looks like you will not be able to complete an experiment. If you choose to write this alternative assignment, you must complete your report and submit it to Yunzhijun Yu ([email protected]) by 11:59pm, August 6, 2018.

Business 343 Research Requirement FAQ Quick Link: https://sfubeedie.sona-systems.com How do I sign up for experiments? First, create your account at https://sfubeedie.sona-systems.com Use your SFU ID as your id. You should be sent an automated password that you may change if you prefer. Any experiments available to you when you log onto the website will be shown there. How many experiments can I complete? Just two experiments. But don’t leave it until the last moment. Please note that you should NOT complete the same experiment twice, as you will only receive the 1% bonus for participating in two different experiments. What do I do if I cannot remember my account information? If you changed your password, but cannot remember it, there is a link on the main page. I don’t see any experiments right now. I’m worried I will not be able to complete the experiments. What should I do? Experiment schedules are set up by individual researchers throughout the term; we manage the website but the schedule is up to the researchers. Most will be in June or July, so do not worry if you don’t see anything on a particular logon. If you see something when you log on, it is always best to sign up if you can. What happens if I cannot finish the experiments by the end of the term? Check with your instructor; he/she will have a backup assignment available in case you are unable to complete the experiments. For more details about this assignment, please refer to the notes on the alternative assignment above. What if I don’t complete the experiments or turn in an alternative assignment? You will forfeit the chance to earn a 1% bonus that will be added your course grade. It’s the easiest 1% you can possibly earn. Do you really want to end up just short of the next letter grade up because you missed out on this? I need to change or cancel my appointment. How do I do that? You may change your appointment on‐ ‐line up to 24 hours in advance. If you have less than 24 hours, it would be helpful for you to contact the researcher directly by email (check the scheduling system for contact information). I missed an appointment. What should I do? You will need to reschedule. Contact the researcher first, since the system may not allow you to reschedule for the same experiment until the researcher updates your record. When and where are the experiments held? Most experiments are held in the Beedie Computing Lab (WMC2301) or in a small classroom (WMC4317) during business hours. Occasionally, experiments are posted as surveys that can be simply completed online. Occasionally other locations, dates, and times are used, so make sure you take note of the location when you sign up.
