Description

Interview Questionnaire – Prepare a list of questions that will be asked during the interview process. “The candidate interview is a vital component of the hiring process” (SHRM, n.d.). It gives the opportunity to the hiring manager to estimate the candidate's interest in the job and the company; to assess their expertise, knowledge, strengths, weaknesses, and skills; to gain insight about their work history and experience; to reveal their values and work habits; and to unfold their career aspirations (Half, 2022). To make the most out of the candidate interview, hiring managers need to prepare a questionnaire, in conformation with the relevant legislation, that will allow them to obtain the information they need (SHRM, n.d.). Below is a series of 25 open-ended and close-ended, behavioral and situational questions prepared for the HR and hiring manager to have at hand during the candidate interviews for the supervisor position. The questions are designed to reveal if the potential hire is a good fit for the requirements of the specific position and if they will be able to navigate and improve the current work circumstances. 1. What do you know about our company? This question will reveal if the candidate is familiar with the company and its work, or if they didn’t even bother to research it (Half, 2022). 2. What attracted you to apply for this position? This question allows the interviewer to gauge if the applicant has an enthusiasm for the position (Apollo Technical LLC, 2022). 3. Tell me about yourself. This question will help to learn more about the person (Furman, 2022). 4. What skills and strengths can you bring to this position? This question should reveal if the candidate feels their abilities will benefit our team (Half, 2022). 5. What has your typical role on a team been? This question will reveal if they have been in charge of projects, or if they were in more of a supportive role (Apollo Technical LLC, 2022). 6. How would your colleagues describe you?

This question will give a better idea of how they view themselves in the eyes of others and should reveal clues on their ability to work within a team environment (Apollo Technical LLC, 2022). 7. What steps do you take when making decisions? This question will give insight into the interviewee’s critical thinking skills and organizational processes they apply to decision-making situations (Apollo Technical LLC, 2022). 8. Can you tell me about your current job? This question will help evaluate communication skills, while gaining insights into the individual's background that goes beyond the resume (Half, 2022). 9. What could your current company do to be more successful? This inquiry can give a sense of whether interviewees see the big picture at their organizations. It may also reveal why they really want to leave their current jobs (Half, 2022). 10. What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on in a past position? This question can determine if the applicant would likely enjoy the work available at the company (Half, 2022). 11. What is a work accomplishment that makes you proud? This question gives a better idea about the candidate’s achievements and interests (Apollo Technical LLC, 2022). 12. Do you work best alone or on a team? This question helps determine if they’re suited to the types of assignments they’ll receive (Half, 2022). 13. What are some weak points you can work on? Everybody has weaknesses, knowing them, admitting them, and having a strategy to improve says a lot about the person’s character (Apollo Technical LLC, 2022). 14. Why are you leaving your current job? This question will reveal if the position will provide an alternative to the factors that didn’t satisfy them in their current job. As well as if they have unrealistic expectations (Half, 2022). 15. How do you delegate responsibilities within the team?

This question shows how the candidate approaches task distribution among their team members and prioritizes and evaluates each task (Furman, 2022). 16. What do you do to build a positive team culture? This will reveal the applicant’s values and their way of building healthy relationships and managing subordinate expectations (Furman, 2022). 17. Would you give me an example of when you had to deliver negative feedback? This will help understand if the candidate is able to direct people towards better results and handle the unpleasant parts of the job (Furman, 2022). 18. How would you describe your management style? This question will give insight of the interviewee’s mind set regarding managing a team (Furman, 2022). 19. How do you build trust in your team? This will shed light on the applicant’s methods of team building and bonding (Furman, 2022). 20. What are you passionate about? This will give a hint if the person is excited about their work and life, and will show up energized to the workplace (Clark, 2021). 21. Outside of work, what’s a new skill or habit you’re currently working on to improve yourself? This can indicate if the applicant is self-motivated, proactive, and productive (Salter, 2022, as cited in Moore, 2022). 22. How would you deal with a difficult coworker? This situational question allows the interviewer to find out if the candidate has the ability to diffuse and prevent potential conflict among team members (McGee, 2022, as cited in Moore, 2022). 23. How do you influence others to work with you? This behavioral question reveals how collaborative the prospective employee is and how they influence people to work with them to accomplish common goals (McGee, 2022, as cited in Moore, 2022). 24. What’s the worst conflict you’ve managed between two subordinates or work colleagues? How did you resolve it?

This shows if the candidate will actively work to manage through conflict on their teams, and if they’re able to find a way to mitigate negative feelings or behaviors (Cenedella, 2022, as cited in Moore, 2022). 25. Do you have any questions for me? This question typically wraps up the interview. Most candidates who are interested in the job will be prepared with a few relevant questions for a hiring manager (Half, 2022).
