Description

Part A The stock market crash in 1929 was a major cause for the Great Depression. Stock market prices had a sudden drop and people panicked because it took ten billion dollars in value which is why people started trying to find buyers for it. Banks lost their funds and could not cover their customers’ deposits which allowed for a restriction of banking and customers could not access their money. (Norton, 2015). Agriculture was another things that caused the Great Depression. Farmers had to take out loans just so they can keep their farms running because the farming prices hit an all time low. The farmers tried to produce more, but with the competition from other countries and the prices being so low, it did no good. The loans may have worked for a while, but the farmers could not make enough to compensate and pay the loans back. It got so bad that banks had to foreclose on the farmers because of this and because they couldn’t even pay for their taxes nor their mortgages. (Norton, 2015).

Part B The National Industrial Recovery Act allowed workers to petition for raises and better work environments and form unions, which was all addressed by the New Deal. The National Recovery Administration was formed from this to make for certain the guidelines for the workplace were followed. It also collaborated with other businesses to create industrywide codes which allowed manufacturers to create industrywide prices and wages. (Norton, 2015). The New Deal also addressed the Agricultural Adjustment Act. The goal with this Act was to stop the crop prices from plunging by offering farmers a series of payments but only to the ones that agreed to drop the price on certain crops and limit production of certain crops. Many Americans had a hard time understanding why so many people were going hungry and so much food was getting destroyed. Sharecropper farms started disappearing in the South as a lot of the African Americans went to bigger cities and towns. (Norton, 2015). In the 1920’s, and the beginning of World War I, a banking crisis came about in which the stock market and real estate plunged, risky loans were taken out by American banks, and prices of agriculture was outrages. Even though customers still had deposits, banks just did not have the funds to cover them, so customers withdrew their money when they started to worry. They would go as far as hiding their money under their mattresses to keep it safe. By time Roosevelt had his inauguration, banks had put a limit on the money the customers had access to. He had closed the banks for four days only the day after his inaugural. He then asked that America supported him when he encouraged people to deposit their money back into the bank; this is how he came up with and put into place, the Emergency Banking Relief Bill. This bill was signed into law after being passed by a united House vote all in the same day and before it was seen. It is a bill that allowed private banks to be supported by reopening and reorganizing banks and federal money. The day the banks opened back up, people were excited and lined up to make

their deposits. This saved the United States banking system and helped it to progress to where it is today. (Norton, 2015).

Part C1 A main contribution to the stresses of the Cold War was the arms race. Attempting to use nuclear weapons was something that the United States and the Soviet Union both questioned about the opposing country. Tension was tremendously increased when each country thought it would be necessary for defense mechanisms therefore the disagreements continued. (Norton, 2015).

Part C2 When the United States and the Soviet Union had opposing views, effects from differing ideologies started being felt which caused a major increase in tension during the Cold War. These opposing views consisted of the Soviet Union wanting communism spread all over the regions and the United States did not agree to communism. (Norton, 2015).

Part C3 The American culture was affected by the tensions of the Cold War in many ways. The entire United States had felt this tension in which, through modern media of this time period, war propaganda was introduced. Anti-communism films were publicly released to try to increase patriotism. American culture was affected by these tensions, as well as concerns with security. The National Security Act of 1947 was a domestic policy started because of these. The National Security Council, the Office of Secretary of Defense, and the C.I.A. was all also created by this act. (Norton, 2015).

Part D Legal discrimination was effectively ended by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The United States society was introduced from this movement because of the many new changes. The Civil Rights Act was implemented by federal agencies; public agencies placed holds on funds to companies that discriminated. Sex discrimination was a movement added to the Civil Rights Act which was considered a cultural shift; it was added after the act was originally established. The National Organization for Women, also known as N.O.W., was formed because of this. The EEOC was pressured by N.O.W. to enforce within the workplace, the equality for women. (Norton, 2015).
