JYT2 lesson plan GENERAL INFORMATION

Lesson Title & Subject(s): Opinion Writing Topic or Unit of Study: Writing Grade/Level: 1 Instructional Setting: 1st grade classroom consisting of 19 students. 2 with IEPs and 2 highly capable students. STANDARDS AND OBJECTIVES

Your State Core Curriculum/Student Achievement Standard(s): CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure. Lesson Objective(s): Students will compose an opinion piece including a topic sentence minimum of 3 reasons supporting their opinion and a conclusion.  TTAINABLE (reasonable, realistic outcome for this individual lesson) Lesson objectives should also be A  ELEVANT (aligned with the state standard and assessment listed for this lesson). and R MATERIALS AND RESOURCES

Instructional Materials: Paper, pencils, graphic organizer, smart board Resources: Common Core State Standards quick flip book INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN

Sequence of Instructional Procedures/Activities/Events (provide description and indicate approximate time for each): 1. Student Prerequisite Skills/Connections to Previous Learning: This is the 2nd writing style we will have learned. Students know how to compose a sentence with capitals, punctuation and the parts of a narrative writing piece. They will use these skills to write about their opinion.

2. Presentation Procedures for New Information and/or Modeling:

Presentation Procedures for New Information : Explain the purpose of the lesson. Explain at least one activity which serves as an anticipatory set, schema, or review of definition of terms activity and actively engages students and allows them to do at least one of the following: ● We will discuss the parts of a narrative piece and how it's parts are similar to writing a letter. Modeling: the learning target of this lesson is to learn how to write a friendly letter.

At this time, I will show the students the graphic organizer on the smart board. It has all the parts for opinion writing including a topic sentence, 3 reasons supporting their opinion and a closing sentence. I will then complete an example on the smart board using the graphic organizer while they observe, telling them about each part as we go and explaining that I would like them to try for at least 3 reasons in the body of the letter. 3. Guided Practice: Next I will have a helper pass out graphic organizers. We will complete the graphic organizer together using a common opinion decided on by vote. I will call on students to share possible reasons to include. We will complete all parts together using the same topic opinion, reasons, and closing. 4. Independent Student Practice: The students will now complete a graphic organizer independently with their own opinion. While seated back at their table groups, I will instruct them to turn and talk with their table group any ideas, reasons and thoughts with each other. I will provide a prompt for them on the smart board. The prompt will be "what do you like better, pizza or ice cream? I will leave our group graphic organizer up on the smart board for reference. 5. Culminating or Closing Procedure/Activity/Event: The students will then read their opinion to our class. I will be observing and collecting data on whether students included a topic opinion, 3 reasons and a closing while they are reading aloud.

Instructional Strategy (or Strategies): Modeling and gradual release is being used in this lesson

Differentiated Instruction Accommodations: My first student with modifications required on his IEP are shortened assignment length. He will only be required to include 1 reason in the body of his letter. The second student with an IEP has an accommodation of a scribe. I will meet this by having her dictate to me what she would like written and I will write it with a highlighter for her to trace. For my 2 highly capable students, I will have them provide reasons on why not to choose the opposing option. This encourages them to consider the pros and cons of both options.

Use of Technology:

I will be using a smart board during this lesson

Student Assessment/Rubrics: I will be using a formative assessment. While students are reading their opinion to the class I will be documenting whether they include a topic sentence, how many reasons they included and that they include a closing sentence....
