Phase 3 Week 2: (set 7 phonemes p. 74) Practice recognition and recall of Phase Two graphemes Reading and spelling CVC words High Frequency words: (Practise reading see p92) Words: no go I the to - non-decodable “tricky” words. Practise reading & writing sentences Monday Revisit/ Review
Prior learning Practise GPCs: s a t p i n m d g o c k ck e u r h b f f l ll ss Play Flashcards. Hold up the letter cards the children have learned, one at a time. Ask the children, in chorus, to say the lettersound (with the action if used). If the children do not respond, turn the card over to show the mnemonic (e.g. the letter s on one side and a picture of a snake shaped like an s on the other) Sometimes you could ask the children to say the letter-sounds in a particular way (e.g. happy, sad, bossy or timid – mood sounds). As the children become familiar with the letters, increase the speed of presentation so that the children learn to respond quickly. Quickwrite letters (children can practice in the air first, then on backs, then on hands etc). Teacher model writing in air and on w/bs. Resources: Small whiteboards, pens and wipes for each child or pair of children Procedure Say a letter-sound (with the mnemonic and action if necessary) and ask the children to write it, saying the letter formation patter as they do so. If the children are sharing a whiteboard both write, one after the other. Ask children to show you and model any necessary corrections
Teach
– Teach and practice reading / spelling Introduce the phoneme /j/ with actions – (see p78 in Letters and Sounds) J for jelly – children shake and wobble as they say the sound
Practise
– Practice reading and spelling (CVC words) (high-frequency words might also be taught here) Play Soundbuttons (see p58) Words: jam jet jog Jill Jack Write words on board and add sound buttons underneath each letter. Sound talk each letter as you point to the sound
button. Blend the word. Ask children to say sounds as you point to each sound button and then ask them to blend the word. (Highlight capital letter for names). Display another word, ask the children to sound-talk it with you and then say the word to their partners. Repeat with as many words as are appropriate. Get to the point where the children are independently soundtalking the words and saying them to their partners. Apply
– Practice reading Hold up caption on card or whiteboard (these can be made on a flip chart or on card – pictures to illustrate the captions help) Read together and model reading tricky words. Jack and Jill jog up the hill. Jog to get the jam. A man can jog to get fit....
