D091 Intro to Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment- Task 4 Passed....

Description

Task 4 Part B. 1.Description 

Use of instructional strategies: Since the only part of the lesson that is being presented is the “Presentation Procedures for New Information”, I was only giving direct instruction. I was asking them several questions about each coin.

Use of resources and technology: During this part of the lesson I was not using any technology. The only resources I was using were chart paper, large paper coins and the students cup of coins.

Body language, speech, and interactions: I made sure to make my speech enthusiastic yet calming in order to keep the attention of my “1st garders”. My body language involved a lot of hand gestures in order to put emphasis on certain parts of the coin I was talking about and pointing to our anchor chart as new vocabulary was being introduced. Plenty of positive interactions were made as I was polite and empathetic with what the students had to say. I also made sure to meet the needs of all the students in any question or concernes they had throughout the lesson. Actions and speech of other participants: My audience at first was very quiet and withdrawn mostly becaue they were shy of being recorded. As the lesson went on they opened up, forgot about the camera and acted like students following the lesson and doing the work. They also answered all the questions I asked and even had questions for me to answer.

2. Feelings 

Before the presentaion I was extremly nervous because I don’t do well talking infront of people. As I got into the lesson I felt confident in how I was teaching because I have experience in doing so, I’m currently a library assistant and have been a substitute teacher for 4 years. I got into the role of being a teacher and felt as though I was actually teaching a class of 1st graders. After the lesson I felt proud of what I did, It confirmed that teaching is what I was ment to do. The audience was my family so before the presentaion I told them they would be playing the role a first grade class. At first they were quiet and didn’t know what to say, I think it was because they’ve never seen me teach. As the lesson went on, they got more into character and followed along. At the end they expressed that they had fun and they felt proud of me.

3. Evaluation

I feel confident in the way I taught and presented my lesson. I made sure to meet the needs of all my students. I had a student that was an English Learner so I was sure to use a lot of hand gestures and display new vocabulary words with visuals. I was always observant in what students were engaged and what I could do to catch the attention of those that were not. Throughout this part of the lesson I mostly used direct instruction. Something I would change in my teaching style would be to pace myself. I was too focused on getting the lesson done that I saw myself talking too fast. In this case since my audience were adults, they followed along but I know with an actual first grade class I would have to take my time in presenting the lesson.

4. Analysis 

The presentation unfolded the way that it did because of my audience, there were only four and they were all adults. Due to the audience, there was a lack of questions that a typical first grader might have asked. There were questions that I asked that didn’t receive as much attention as I wanted it to in order to start a class discussion. Most of the answers were brief because of the class size which most likely caused the presentation to go by so quickly. The positive side was that my lesson kept my audience engaged and they were answering all the questions I had. Another positive aspect was that one of my “students” did not speak English so I had the opportunity to experience how I would differentiate my teaching if I had an EL student.

5. Conclusion 

The most important lesson I learned from this presentation was that not everything is going to go as planned. Your plan for a lesson must be flexible in order to meet the needs of all the students. Another lesson I learned was when you love what you do it all comes out naturally and give you a sense of pride. As for my teaching style, I didn’t learn much that didn’t already know. In presenting a new topic I learned that I do fairly well in asking questions that will capture their attention and get them to lead a conversation.

6. Action 

In order to improve my teaching and presentation I would pace myself and slow down the lesson. I noticed that I was talking too fast, but I feel that was because I don’t do well in talking to an audience of adults and rush in trying to get it over with. I would also integrate a more cooperative learning style where students work together instead of it just being student centered. Also, if I had a realistic sized class and full lesson, I'd have to come better prepared, I felt I did the least I’d have to do with the materials I had. I’d also like to provide materials that would keep my first graders engaged like manipulatives to enhance the lesson....
