Description

D095 Task 1 Melinda Middleton

1 . My future class is a Second-grade elementary class containing children ages 7 through 8. Students would be taught a variety of subjects during the day. I would incorporate learning centers into my instructional plan, such as Math, Science, and Reading Centers. 2. As the classroom manager, it is my duty to create a positive, safe, and productive learning environment. This will be accomplished by working with groups of students, as well as independently, adjusting my lesson plans to engage and promote learning for all my students. I will create an appropriate place for diverse students by discovering unique things to them, helping them achieve their goals. I will be open to ways I can adjust my teaching methods and class environment to offer accommodations for the students who need them.

3. My three goals are to promote learning in a safe and positive environment, to set behavioral guidelines upfront and early, and to keep my students interested and engaged in classroom lessons. A4. I would have my desk diagonal in the front corner of the room opposite the door. Student’s desks will be in traditional classroom rows, placed in rows of four, in the center of the classroom facing front, so everyone can see the Smart Board. The back of the class would be lined up with the different centers, Science, Math, and Reading. One side would most likely be covered with windows, so I would have a colorful window treatment for those. The other side will be bulletin boards decorated for each season and holiday. I would also include a calendar with events, names of students with birthdays coming up, and display the children’s work for everyone to see. The Math Center would have calculators, wipe-off boards, numbers and counters, measurement tools, operation cards, manipulative kits, play money, and other problem-solving aides. There would be lots of colorful examples of mathematical equations correlating to our current lesson. The Science Center would be stocked with plenty of items to go along with the lesson we were currently on, probably including magnifying glasses, plastic mirrors, and prisms, magnets, scale, leaves, dried insects, twigs, and rocks. Our Reading Center would be a relaxing place with a small couch, side table, and lamp placed in the middle with a bookshelf on either side filled with books for the children to read. Good behavior would earn them the privilege of checking a book out to take home. A4a. On special occasions, such as holiday parties and assignments that allow for group

collaboration, we would take the desks and arrange them in groups of 4 or 5, depending on the number of students in the class. This way, the students in each group can be face to face from each other to communicate and socialize. Another option is that I would take all the desk and arrange them together in a big ‘U” shape in the center or the room for special projects or

occasions. I remember doing this in a class I was in for the Christmas Party, it added extra excitement and involvement amongst the classmates. The wipeoff/smart boards will be on the wall directly beside my desk. The reading table, where groups of students will come sit with me and practice reading aloud, will occupy one back corner, and the rest of the wall space will be filled with our different learning centers and bookshelves.

5. Each student will have their name on a popsicle stick and every morning during breakfast, I will draw sticks to determine who our “helpers” for the day are. Duties will include line leader, teacher assistant, clean up manager, and door holder. This process will be communicated on the first day, and then each day after as needed so that everyone understands. Another routine for my second grade class will involve going to centers. There will only be 4 students allowed at a time in each center, so I will create a PowerPoint with a timer on it and display on the smart board. When it’s time for kids to rotate centers, the PowerPoint will let us know and the kids can keep up with how much time they have in each center. I will act it out and go over how it works on the first day, and then as needed after that. It will be the same everyday to create a regular routine.

6. 1. Keep hands and feet to yourself. 2. Be kind to others. 3. Raise your hand to speak in class. Being kind to other people and learning to control yourself from touching others or blurting out in class are distinct good behavior techniques that will benefit these children throughout their lives and the earlier they are taught these things, the better. By following these rules, my classroom will be a peaceful and productive learning environment. With less time wasted on bad behavior and understanding the rules and how to abide by them, we can enjoy more classroom activities on a normal basis. 6b. These rules will be posted at the front of the room on a big, colorful board. We will read them together every morning before class.

7. For this second grade class, I would use the “clip” technique. Each student would have a clothesline clip with their name on it. There will be a chart with all the clips attached a neutral location, all students start at that point each morning. Students will have the opportunity to “clip up”, or “clip down” throughout the day. Clipping up will earn rewards such as extra center time, candy, smiley face sticker, or hand stamp. Clipping down will result in a warning, lost recess, trip to the principle, and lastly…… contact parents.

8. I think my technique of using the popsicle sticks to determine “jobs” each morning is a great way for the students to be involved. This lets them know exactly what they are responsible for each day. There aren’t enough popsicle jobs for every student to work on each day, but they will be excited each morning to see who gets to do what. I could also allow those who have been chosen to pick an assistant to help them, creating an opportunity for them to collaborate and involve each other....
