FAP Task 2: Trends in the Ecosystem

College of Health Professions, Western Governors University C799: Healthcare Ecosystems

2 Impact on Growth Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a well-respected institution with a reputation decorated in accomplishments. The institution’s humble roots stem from a small healthcare facility by the name of Kaspare Cohn Hospital founded in 1902, situated in the affluent Angeleno Heights neighborhood [CITATION Abo \l 1033 ]. At the time, many Eastern European Jews who migrated to Los Angeles were impacted by tuberculosis, subjecting the community to discrimination as employers and landlords did not want the illness spreading to their own [ CITATION Luc13 \l 1033 ]. In response, Cohn converted one of his properties in Angeleno Heights into the Kaspare Cohn Hospital. Unfortunately, those living in the area objected to having tuberculosis patients in their neighborhood and coerced the city council to restrict the facility from taking in such patients [ CITATION Mic02 \l 1033 ]. Determined to keep fighting against the Jewish tuberculosis epidemic, Cohn moved the new treatment facility that would precede the Cedars of Lebanon to Boyle Heights, a community with a rising Jewish population [CITATION Luc14 \l 1033 ]. In the same locality, the heart of Mount Sinai started as a two-room hospice that would soon be relocated and expanded into a fifty-bed treatment facility on Bonnie Beach Place [ CITATION Abo \l 1033 ]. The idea of merging the Cedars of Lebanon with Mount Sinai was catalyzed by the unification of the Jewish Community Council and the Federation of Jewish Welfare Organizations, creating the Jewish Federation Council of Los Angeles [ CITATION Luc132 \l 1033 ]. The merger Cedars-Sinai came as a response to the increasing need for comprehensive healthcare in the community, ultimately combining the forces of two exceptional institutions into a substantial organization with over one thousand hospital beds [ CITATION Abo \l 1033 ].

3 Service Cedars-Sinai offers several community health and education programs throughout Los Angeles, catering to underserved communities that may otherwise not have access to these resources. One such project is the “Share and Care” program that works with at-risk children in school afflicted by trauma that may be impacting them emotionally or academically, using licensed mental health clinicians, art therapists, parent education, and teacher consultation to promote healthy coping and self-esteem [ CITATION Sha \l 1033 ]. Other free services CedarsSinai offers to the community include free health screenings, immunizations, and a program for seniors called “Center Strutters” that promotes “fitness and friendship” [ CITATION Com \l 1033 ]. Impact on Healthcare Delivery Physicians and nurses at Cedars-Sinai utilize the clinical decision support system, “InterQual”, to assist in areas such as determining the patient’s length of stay, the necessary level of care, and use of procedures or tests [CITATION Reg \l 1033 ]. InterQual is integrated within the hospital’s electronic health records system, gathering specific evidence-based data to generate an automated medical review for providers [ CITATION Int21 \l 1033 ]. Using this technology benefits all participants in the healthcare system: providers can reduce manual error and transparency for payers is increased due to the accessibility of these automated medical reviews, improving the patient experience overall. Emerging Technology Using the “My CS-Link” patient portal, Cedars-Sinai can carry out its vision of engaging patients in their care and wellness more fully [ CITATION Our \l 1033 ]. My CS-Link offers a variety of patient-geared services including appointment scheduling, health summaries generated

4 from the electronic health record, test results, and prescription renewal requests [ CITATION Fre1 \l 1033 ]. The portal is a means of communication for the patient, allowing them to connect with their medical team [ CITATION Fre1 \l 1033 ]. This emerging technology allows CedarsSinai to effectively carry out its goal to deliver exemplary service at all sites of care, including electronic [ CITATION Our \l 1033 ].
