My name is Taylor Barefield and I’m first-year college student pursuing a career in Human Resource Management to become an Administration Assistant. Personally, in my opinion about choosing a career is yes, it can be difficult and stressful for because basically you’re making one of your lifetime commitments but also, sometimes, a career can follow you without you realizing in my case, that happened during my senior year of high school when I worked as a supervisor/student worker at my school district Administration Building where I realized when I was a good communicator/listener, loves to help others and the community, problem-solving, and great with computers so that’s why I chose this career path. When I take the Clifton Strengths Assessment for students, my top trait was 1. Empathy when means I can sense the emotion around me and I’m able to see the world through their eyes and share their perspective. My other four traits are 2. Intellection which means I like to think and do mental activity like puzzles and do word search, 3. Adaptability means I live in the moment. I don’t see the future as a fixed destination. Instead, I see it as a place that I create out of the choices that I make right now, 4. Strategic means I’m enables to sort through the clutter and find the best route, and finally, 5. Positivity means I’m generous with praise, quick to smile, and always on the lookout for the positive in the situation. An Administration Assistant or some may call them Secretaries perform a variety of clerical and administrative duties that are necessary to run an organization efficiently (Occupational Outlook Handbook). They use computer software to create spreadsheets; manage databases; and prepare presentations, reports, and documents (Occupational Outlook Handbook). They also may negotiate with vendors, buy supplies, and manage stockrooms or corporate

libraries. Secretaries and administrative assistants also use videoconferencing, fax, and other office equipment. Specific job duties vary by experience, job title, and specialty (Occupation Outlook Handbook). Although secretaries and administrative assistants work in nearly every industry, many are employed in schools, hospitals, and government, legal, and medical offices. Most work full time (Occupational Outlook Handbook). To become an administration assistant, High school graduates who have experience using computer software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheet programs, usually qualify for entry-level positions (Occupational Outlook Handbook). Although most secretaries learn their job in several weeks, many legal and medical secretaries require additional training to learn industry-specific terminology (Occupational Outlook Handbook). Executive secretaries usually need several years of related work experience (Occupational Outlook Handbook). I could have just gone straight to my career, but instead, I want to have a degree in hand for better job opportunities in my job types and better salary. The median annual wage for secretaries and administrative assistants was $38,880 in May 2018. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount, and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $24,690, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $64,230 (Occupational Outlook Handbook). New Secretaries and Administration Assistants generally start around $22,175. Normal pay for Secretaries and Administration Assistants is $35,837 per year, while highly experienced workers can earn as much as $57,218 (HCC Career Coach). Secretaries and Administration Assistants perform routine clerical and administrative functions such as drafting correspondence, scheduling appointments, organizing and maintaining paper and electronic files, or providing information to callers (Career OneStop). Diploma or equivalent which I don’t necessary need work experience except a one month on the training but I had work experiences at the field from my High School Administration Building and Again, I chose to attend college to get a degree to better Job Opportunities and Salary. Since October, 5057 companies have posted 19,556 jobs for Secretaries and Administrative Assistants (HCC Career Coach). There are currently 49,074 Secretaries and Administrative Assistants that are employed in Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, TX (HCC Career Coach). The average salary that I need to achieve to sustain the lifestyle I want according to my Texas Reality Check assessment is $90,375 a year (Texas Reality Check). According to the local statistics for the Houston areas presented in my research, I should be able to easily reach that necessity with a median annual salary of $38,880. with the national average of $38,800, I would be able to afford the way I hoping to live. I plan on live simple and comfortably, I don’t need to be on the latest and expense brand wages to help me survive and to be happy in my life but I do intent to save money for me (possibly my future family) to have food, clothes and a home and treat myself now and again. My survival will be my biggest expensive in my reality check assessment, but I still want to live my life and some unfinish business to take care of. If I end up excelling quickly in my career and begin to make more money than the national or Houston average, I would save for retirement and giving back to the community or a causes but most importantly, giving to my parents as a thank you for raising me for become the person I am today by getting the things they always dreamed of having one day in a heartbeat. Given my career choice, I will live in an area with larger companies well-known or locally known surround in need of assistants, typically larger cities like Houston and Austin.
