Description

Career Plan Essay Recently, I have changed my mind about my future career plans. I am now focusing on being a psychologist working in the Human Resources department of a company. In order to do this, I am planning on changing my minor from American Sign Language to Human Resource Management. I am doing this to gain knowledge in the HR department and because, based on my research, it will help me get a job in an HR department. I think I would be a good fit for this job because I love helping people and being someone that others can confide in. If an employee is having a problem in the workplace or with another employee, I would love to be the person to help them resolve their issue. I also love the psychological aspect of this job. I think it would be fascinating to assess people and figure out which personality types work well together and to decide who would be a good fit in the company I work for. As for my ten year timeline, I am on track to graduate in December of 2023, so that is my current plan. After this, I do not plan on going to grad school. Many companies do not require a Master’s degree for a job in this field, and I would prefer to get a job directly out of college rather than spending more time and money in school. As for a job, I would like to stay in South Carolina, particularly Greenville, but if I found a good job in another city or state I would make the move if i needed to. I would prefer to work in the HR department of a bigger company. Some large companies in Greenville that I could potentially get a job at are Michelin,

Duke Energy, or Bosch. I am not currently particular about a certain company, especially because almost every business has an HR department. Of course, I would have to start at a lower-level position, but I would work hard and I would like to eventually hold the title of VP of Human Resources. My alternate career plan would be to attend grad school to become an occupational therapist. This job seems fit for me because I love to help others, and that is the entirety of what an OT does. I would love to watch patients grow and learn life skills with my help. My ten year timeline with this career would look a lot different than that of my first plan. After graduating college in December of 2023, I would attend grad school in an Occupational Therapy program. Because I grew up and am already attending school here, I would prefer to stay in South Carolina. I know I cannot tie myself down to a limited amount of schools, so I would consider attending a program out-of-state. There are only 2 OT schools in South Carolina, MUSC and USC’s Lenoir-Rhyne University. I would be happy to attend either, but particularly MUSC. During grad school, I would love to have an internship with an occupational therapist. This would give me the experience needed to have a successful career. I would also need to pass the NBCOT Exam to receive licensure as a certified occupational therapist. After graduating from MUSC and receiving my Master’s in Occupational Therapy, I would love to have a job in a private practice or physician’s office. From here, I would work hard to gain more clients and to elevate my skills and experience. I

would eventually like to own my own practice in a city where there are many potential clients. In order to do this, I would have to find a space perfect for my business and I would have to have the money to pay for it. This would definitely take some time, but in the end I know it would be worth it to own and grow my own practice....
