This is an assignment from my class with Professor Scow. Happy studying!...
Sameeha Khalil The reason why I decided to reflect on my career genogram is because I realized that although my family has an assortment of careers, they hope that I pursue the sciences. My father is an information technology (IT) program director and my mother is a kindergarten teacher. Meanwhile, my aunts, uncles, and grandparents are a mix of doctors, administrators, and realestate workers. The fact that I have some family that are doctors is also an indicator for why they encourage me to work towards a career in the sciences. They do not encourage any specific career in the sciences, only generally, and of course hope that I am successful. This is why I began by declaring a major in biology, and now although I want to change my major, I will stay in the sciences by pursuing a pre-health major such as nursing or dental hygiene. Personally, I did not choose the sciences only because my parents encouraged the career, but because I am also interested in the sciences. I am intrigued not only by the vast scientific and medical knowledge available, but by the many opportunities to help others within the sciences. This is another reason why I hope to pursue this career. Since I was in high school, I have always wanted to help and care for children. Throughout my high school years, I volunteered for children’s activities at my local library, at a child care center, tutored, and even babysat for a few years as a job for several families. I do not want to become a pediatrician, but hope to pursue the pediatrics track in nursing or care for children and adult’s dental health within dental hygiene. I am now taking pre-requisite courses for courses relevant to both nursing and dental hygiene, and will change my major once I have decided which track to pursue. Furthermore, the career genogram has shown me evidence of how my family’s wishes and my own agree and this is why I hope to remain in the sciences, specifically in pediatrics....
