Polycystic Kidney Disease: A review of Wikipedia Wikipedia is a large database of information that anyone can access or alter, meaning the information stored is not as reliable and credible as one may wish. Polycystic Kidney disease is the disorder I intend to delve deeper into. This disease is an inherited disorder of the kidneys in which fluid filled cysts grow in the kidney, leading to kidney failure. This disorder was found in chapter nine from the Corexcel site. As many diseases are inherited genetically, I am interested in learning about how Wikipedia characterizes the disease and the depth of genetic information. On Wikipedia, Polycystic Kidney Disease is classified as a genetic disorder in which the structure of the renal tubes is abnormal, causing growth of cysts within the kidneys. This disorder can be inherited by autosomal dominance or autosomal recessive genes due to abnormal protein production. Unfortunately, this disease may cause kidney dysfunction or failure by midlife, and there are no proven therapies to prevent Polycystic Kidney disease from progressing (“Polycystic Kidney Disease” 1). While Wikipedia was on the right track with making the disease more available for any non-medical professional to understand, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (“What is Polycystic Kidney Disease?” 1) sums up the reason why this disease is so bad. In this genetic disorder, patients develop fluid-filled cysts that grow in the kidneys, eventually altering the shape of the kidneys. This shape disfiguration leads to eventual kidney failure. This disease is a form of chronic kidney disease, meaning the kidneys can no longer function in a way that properly filters blood through the body, which affects many blood related structures, such as blood vessels in the body, as well as inducing high blood pressure. This genetic mutation is one of the most common genetic disorders there is and affects many people

in the United States. There is no proven cure, but physicians suggest physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, getting enough sleep, and reducing stress. Additionally, polycystic kidney disease is defined by Dr. Chapman, Dr. Rahbari-Oskoui and more as an inherited disease that causes irreversible decline in kidney function. This disease is caused by two genetic mutations PKD1 and PKD2 on two separate chromosomes. Patients with PKD1 reach end stage renal disease, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to stay alive, and often die at a younger age than PKD2 counter parts. Many factors contribute to polycystic kidney disease, but male gender is a factor, and the reasons are unknown (RahbariOskoui et.al. 1). In the Wikipedia update, it was stated that gender had no influence on the progression of the disorder. The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology states that PKD is the most common genetic cause of kidney failure. This is characterized by cystic dilation that progresses in the renal tubules, resulting in nephromegaly and finalizes with end-stage renal disease. The mutation of protein polycystin yields two different mutations that cause different varieties of the disorder, polycystin-1 and polycystin-2 which lie in the cilium. Each protein functions at a different rate, in which PKD1 occurs earlier in patients (American Society of Nephrology 1). In all, Wikipedia’s definition for polycystic kidney disease is very detailed for the nonmedical professional. It does directly state the classification of a genetic disorder, and the area in which the disorder occurs, which is in the renal tubules. Wikipedia also mentions the genetic variations of genetic inheritance by both autosomal dominant and recessiveness. While the more developed information may not be standardized, the general overview is correct, and even states that the defect stems from the cilium. All of the information is generalized and to the point, but based off of the credible sources, is it just summarized for the non-medical professional.

If I were to write an updated Wikipedia definition of polycystic kidney disease, I would add more details. Polycystic Kidney disease is a form of Chronic kidney disease that is genetically inherited through autosomal processes. This disorder is characterized by a mutation in which the protein polycystin produces cysts that congregate in the kidney and decrease overall kidney function to eventual failure, through time and shape progression. This genetic disorder can affect a wide range of people and is the of the most common hereditary diseases in the United States.
