Case Study Template...
Executive Report Outline Using the System Approach Team Name Date Include names of all team members:
NOTE: This is a 2 to 3 page executive summary of the assigned case. The goal here is to summarize your findings and convince an executive of your conclusion and actions.
1. SUMMARY OF RELEVANT FACTS
Please provide only those facts which are relevant to the PROBLEM and which give direct clues to that PROBLEM (i.e. share problem symptoms here). Assume the reader of your report knows of Case background so avoid doing a rehash of any irrelevant facts. Be Specific - Not Prolific! 2. PROBLEM
State it briefly and explicitly in your very first sentence! (I urge you to start this section with the words: “The problem is ____________ .”) Don't force the reader to deduce it or wait to learn it. Make sure NEGATIVE CLUES go under the SUMMARY above and not in this section. Be Specific - Not Prolific! 3. DECISION
Be explicit - don't imply it - put it up front. Word it so reader can identify it in the ANALYSIS section which follows. Address what is to be done, not how to do it! Don't include reasons why it should be done in this part. Don't include an action plan in this section. Be Specific - Not Prolific!

4. ANALYSIS / ALTERNATIVES
Explore at least 3 alternatives. o Discuss advantages & disadvantages of each. o Use "bullets" if so inclined (+ & -). o Include reasons why to do it or why not to do it. o The "No Action" alternative is not an alternative to solving the problem. (I will ignore it since if it doesn’t solve the problem -- I will not consider it).
Place your recommended alternative first. o The rejected alternatives would follow. o Therefore, your first alternative is your DECISION o Be Specific - Not Prolific! 5. CONCLUSION
Summarize how your DECISION solves the PROBLEM. o Don't rehash negative clues leading up to problem. o Portray the state of success your solution provides. Restate supporting arguments in summary fashion only if you feel this is necessary (sufficient support should appear under ANALYSIS above). This section is not a "Call for Action" in this report (but it likely would be in real life). Be Specific - Not Prolific!
