The Role of Assessment in Teaching and Learning – Chapter 1 Comprehension Check You should be able to answer the following questions after reading through Chapter 1 in our textbook and attending our lesson on the role of assessment in teaching and learning. 1. Figure 1.1 on page 5 overviews six factors that influence classroom instruction and the following pages go on to describe each of these six factors. In your own words, be able to describe how each of the following factors influence classroom assessment: A. 21st-Century Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions: ● the demands to meet the demands of the world, the social and technological demands B. Technology: ● becoming technologically savvy and understanding how to keep information stored and updated through technology C. Principles of Cognitive and Sociocultural Learning and Motivation: ● being knowledgeable about how students learn and how to build information on older information ● teaching decision making skills ● knowing how to keep students motivated and engaged in learning D. Standards-based Education: ● using commonly accepted objectives for student learning E. High-stakes Testing: ● holds teachers and students accountable for the information they are teaching ● changes the way teachers construct every part of the curriculum F. Data Literacy: ● the interpretation of all kinds id date including, attendance, behavior, family, extra curriculars 2. The third paragraph on pg. 11 provides a great explanation of how assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning. Summarize that explanation in your own words. ● The six factors change how we plan to influence our students. We use this to ensure class motivation and student learning. You have to care inorder to make sure your students are getting the best possible learning experience.

3. There are a few times when McMillan writes something along the lines of, “Assessment is much more than simply ‘testing.’” What does McMillan mean by that? ● the possibilities of how we can learn what students know is not only justified by testing

7. McMillan overviews student perceptions of assessment on pp. 26-29. Unsurprisingly, many students find it intimidating to have their learning assessed and are afraid of giving a wrong answer or making a mistake. Based on the information presented in this section, you should be able to give thoughtful answers to the following questions: A. As a classroom teacher, what are things that you can do to create an environment where students aren’t afraid to make mistakes and where students view wrong answers as a learning opportunity? Create an environment where students are comfortable, make them understand that mistakes happen and we can learn from them. Show them that you are not perfect and you do not expect them to be. You can change the assessments to make them challenging and they will motivate your students. You can involve students in creating assessments, giving them some responsibility will go a long way for them. As a teacher you should take time to know your students and their characteristics. B. What is a growth mindset? What are things you can do as a teacher to help students develop a growth mindset? A growth mindset in a student is a mindset that involves development. They do not set limits on themselves, they understand that learning can be hard but not impossible. You can show students how to tackle tasks and appreciate their engagement and motivation to learn. Show them that they are not limited in what they can do. Do what YOU can to make them feel extraordinary....
