Education in a Diverse Society Comprehension Questions – Module 12

1. What is digital citizenship? Digital citizenship is a way of thinking and being online that is safe and employs critical thinking to promote smart and effective online communication. 2. Why is digital citizenship important? It is important because it promotes safe, educational online use as a tool to aid education, and it helps fight cyberbullying and inappropriate internet practices. 3. What are some arguments against the frequent use of technology at school? Arguments against technology at school is that it teaches students to be dependent on technology, and it is less effective for them to learn information by typing than writing. 4. What are some arguments for the frequent use of technology at school? It prepares children with good digital etiquette, allows teachers to assist students with disabilities or language barriers, and allows students to access resources and learning tools that would not be available otherwise. 5. What difficulties did educators and students face when they had to move online due to COVID-19? Educators faced having to learn how to use new educational tools, engaging their students virtually, and having to modify their curriculum and assessments. Students faced struggles with motivation, support from their families, access to technology, and many more barriers. 6. Who is Sal Khan? What impact did he have on education? Sal Khan started making youtube videos to tutor his cousins online 15 years ago, and now has worldwide recognition. This turned into Khan Academy, the catalyst for nonprofit online learning resources, which had the ability to accommodate homeschooled students or those who need extra help. He had a profound impact on education, opening it up to the internet, which has helped so many educators, students, and families. 7. You were asked to review three educational apps that teachers can use in the classroom. Please post the apps you explored and your thoughts on how useful they might be in a classroom a. No Hands is useful to keep students engaged and it eliminates the need for teachers to call on students, keeping the process random and less stressful.

b. Google classroom is helpful to organize assignments and grades, and allows for teachers and students to easily communicate, and for students to organize their responsibilities. c. Edpuzzle allows teachers to work with video clips by assigning them as homework with questions throughout the video. This makes assignments more entertaining for students. 8. How does information from this module connect to what you are seeing in schools? (service learning or otherwise) Being a virtual college student was difficult over quarantine, and my professors had to quickly adapt to use technology and accommodate their students. I was exposed to many new tools such as zoom, perusall, yuja, and more that helped me watch lectures and complete assignments. I believe this change will be semi-permanent in the sense that we will incorporate more technology into the classroom going forward, whether virtual or in person. 9. What questions do you have that still remain or what questions/topics do you feel would be beneficial for class discussion? It would be interesting to discuss what we think the future of education (post COVID) will look like, and what new habits will stick around....
