CH 7 Question Results Question 1:

Bill Haley is one of the most important early Rock 'n' Roll stars to make a successful transition from country music to rock. Even though we consider the first real Rock song to be Ike Turner & Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88" (which Haley covered in 1951!), it was Bill Haley with “Rock Around The Clock” that had the first #1 hit on the pop charts. “Rock Around The Clock” first made the charts in mid-1954, but fell short at #56. It then reached the top of the charts after it was used in the 1954 movie Blackboard Jungle which propelled the song to #1 in July 1955. Haley re-recorded “Rock Around The Clock” in 1973 and it was used until 1976 as the opening credits for the TV show Happy Days. As you listen to this iconic song you will notice the prevalent use of "stop time", but what is the last clock hour that Bill Haley sings before the first solo?

Question 3:

The song “That’ll Be The Day” by Buddy Holly and Jerry Allison (Buddy's drummer) was inspired after the pair saw the 1956 western film The Searchersstarring John Wayne. Wayne's catchphrase "that'll be the day" stuck with them and became the foundation for the 1957 #1 hit. Buddy Holly was also noted for being a skilled guitarist and opens “That’ll Be The Day” with a technically difficult lick. When we get to the solo in the song, what instrument is featured?

Question 4:

Buddy Holly's “Not Fade Away” makes use of the Bo Diddley drum beat made famous by, of course, Bo Diddley in his signature song just a couple of years earlier. There have also been several very successful cover versions of “Not Fade Away” by the Rolling Stones, Rush, The Grateful Dead and Florence and the Machine (on the 2011 album Rave On Buddy Holly celebrating Buddy's 75th birthday). Which other musical elements of the song line up with the drumbeat?

Backing vocals and guitar

Question 5:

The Everly Brothers' “Wake up Little Susie” was the first of four #1 hits for the duo. The song follows the country music formula of story telling where two teenagers miss their curfew after falling asleep (or so they say!) at a boring drive-in movie. The fact that the song even left a question about whether they fell asleep, or perhaps had sex, meant the song was banned from radio play on many stations. Really it's quite an innocent song that captures the essence of being a teenager in the 1950s. Listen to the song and determine which of the following things the singer and little Susie are NOT concerned about?

Question 6:

The song “Poor Little Fool” by Ricky Nelson was the first song to be #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 when the Hot 100 was introduced in 1958. In the 1950s, many singers were considered to be crooners. Crooning is a male vocal style of singing in a delicate, sweet, sentimental way. Listening to Ricky Nelson sing this song, would we consider him to be a crooner?
