Description

BUS-W 430 Change At TutorMe Case  

employs 45 former teachers as tutors in public/private schools; support staff of 15 work in company’s branches&corporate headquarters&home via phone& Internet

TutorMe is beginning to struggle because it is no longer the only provider

two new tutoring chains recently opened branches nearby. Online tutoring firms have added competition as well

organizational culture is “lackadaisical” and business practices as “loose”

Although it provides a meaningful service to students, many of its tutors use their own methods instead of following the TutorMe manuals

Tutor pay is low and benefits are near zero. But the tutors are skilled teachers who appreciate the opportunity to use their expertise in a flexible work situation, and turnover is low facilities look “tired” and are located in mostly abandoned strip malls far from welltraveled roads corporate headquarters is a bit nicer and in a more visible location. But managers often don’t know what the tutors are doing, and billing practices are chaotic. no HR department, business staff handles both payments and employee issues, mostly by creating further problems that upper management must settle Pay for the business staff is mid-range for the area with standard benefits, but high business staff turnover has been an accepted part of TutorMe’s business. consultants believe the company should o eliminate some of its less used branches o relocate other branches to more visible locations o train tutors with the TutorMe manuals and insist on standardization of teaching practices o overhaul the organizational culture to reflect a commitment to tutoring excellence o set expectations and train the business staff to raise performance levels and heightened accountability. consultants have warned TutorMe management that recent studies indicate only 30-43% of organizations achieve their goals for change initiatives.
