letter of advice to future tutors...

Description

Mark Berndt To Future Read 2 Succeed Tutors, For many of you, this will be an extremely exciting experience. Not only will your mentorship to these students influence their reading ability, but you will also notice how you will influence the way they will behave and conduct themselves in the classroom itself. As a tutor, your job is to encourage these kids to read and to get excited about that, but over time you will notice that the kids you are presented with will learn a lot more from you than simply how to read. Although a pandemic may have shortened my time with them, I have no doubt in my mind that every single child got better at not just reading the words presented to them, but completely understanding those words and beginning to use them in their everyday vocabulary. As a tutor, you will spend quite a bit of time with a select group of elementary aged kids, but how you use that time to encourage them in their development is completely up to you. The most important part of this program is the excitement brought by the tutor. As a tutor, your effectiveness will be determined based on how much the students think you care. If you display a positive attitude and encourage the students when they struggle to read a word, then they will learn from that and continue to better themselves. However, if it is obvious that you are not excited to be there (as a tutor), and if you do not encourage students to understand what they are reading, then neither the student nor the tutor will get much out of it. In conclusion, this program has the potential to be extremely meaningful to not just the life of the tutor, but also to the lives of the tutored. But with that being said, the meaning of this experience completely depends on the effort you as a tutor will be willing to put in. Looking back, the most important thing I learned from this experience is that it isn’t just about passing your class. These are real kids who need real help from someone who really cares. As a tutor, the potential for their future lies in your hands, and the sky is the limit. Good luck, Mark Berndt...
