Lianna Doley Chapter 1 Part 2 5. What does Adrienne Rich mean by “claiming an education” and what does that concept have to do with WGS? Claiming an Education  When students go to school and get an education they should think of it not as getting an education but receiving it and making it theirs.  This relates to WGS because even though women went to school they weren’t really getting an education of their own given they were only given a few jobs to choose between.  Women’s studies started to be demanded in the last decade because of the feminist movement in this century. Forty Years of Women’s Studies  From the progress of women pushing towards equal rights for both men and women in schools, and pushing for courses to educate students about sexism and feminism, there are now more than 30 women’s studies journals.  Students who want to go to school hope to get an equal education while studies show “girls are more likely to than boys to be steered away from math and science” which is a sexist issue discussed in WGS.  Along with students all wanting an equal education, as stated in section 2, teachers are most likely going to have a lower expectation for black girls then white girls. No More Miss America  Women are seen as just objects and pretty faces and not what their standards should be, which is a topic discussed in WGS.  Women have “high-heeled low-status roles” and aren’t supped to want to get a good education and have a job that a man should have.  “Miss America represents what women are supposed to be: inoffensive, bland, apolitical.” and the reason they are ‘supposed’ to be like this is because they are seen to not be given a high education and that they are only there to look ‘sexy’ which is a very big issue and topic discussed in WGS. A Day Without Feminism  Women’s colleges are referred to as a college or university but as a “girls school”  “Only 44 percent of women are employed outside of the home.” because not every women is given the right to an education to be able to get a job outside of their household.  “Most girls don’t take calculus or physics; they plan the dances and decorate the gym. Even when girls get better grades than their male counterparts, they are half as likely to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship because many of the

test questions favor boys” this goes to show that girls aren’t able to claim their own education for themselves. Feminist Politics  Women aren’t educated enough or given the right to be education to be able to have more of a voice when it comes to feminism politics.  “Femi sit policies is losing momentum because demist movement has lost clear definitions.”  Some females are just as sexist as males towards their own gender because they aren’t well educated enough about the lack of education rights that some women get. The Power and the Gloria  Steinman says “The deep anthropological, political reason for controlling women s to control reproduction” meaning women are stereotyped to be only used for reproduction.  Steinman was able to become an editor and writer to help write about being an activist, which students now will read in WGS courses.  “Young women are much more willing to support feminist issues than older women.” And these young women who are supporting feminist issues are the ones going to school and getting educated about these problems. Facebook for Women vs. Facebook Designed by Feminists: Different vs. Revolutionary  “ “Women” is a social category, based on a person’s gender self-definition.” “Feminists” is a social category based on a person’s political orientation.”  “Feminism focuses on changing power relationships to bring about social, economic, and ecological justice” which is a powerful movement that students should have the right to learn about in these courses.  “Feminists would approach the project with a political goal in mind” which is what one of the goals bringing WGS courses into schools, to educate not only about the ideas of feminism but the politics that go along with it. Still Needing the F Word  Women are expect to “hide their intelligence in order to succeed with their male peers” which shows how women aren’t looked to be as smart as guys or do jobs that males do which is discussed in WGS.  “Duke study showed that faculty women in the sciences reported less satisfaction in their jobs and less of a sense of belonging than their male counter parts”  This shows that even the women who are being able to claim their education still aren’t being treated fairly like men are. My Heroines  Hero’s that are women aren’t always given the chance to claim their education.

 

Women who stand strong and fight for their rights are always the hero’s and the reason we have classes about WGS. Even though women don’t get the equal education they deserve they are still powerful and can take a stand....
