• Narrator: arrested ○ Lawyer asked if he was sad about the funeral that day ○ Narrator explained: he may have loved Maman, "but that idn't mean anything. At one time or another all normal people have wished their loved ones were dead" (pg. 65) ○ Lawyer interrupted made him "promise I wouldn't say that at my hearing or in front of the examining magistrate" (pg. 65) ○ Narrator: "explained to him…that my nature was such that my physical needs often got in the way of my feelings. The day I buried maman, I was very tired…so much so that I wasn't really aware of what was going on." (pg. 65) ○ Laywer: "that's not enough" (pg. 65) ○ Lawyer tried to tell him what to say but narrator refused because it wasn't true • Narrator went to examining magistrate but lawyer couldn't come "due to unforeseen circumstances" (pg. 66) • Narrator admitted to firing the first shot but when asked why he paused before the second and why he did it narrator genuinely had no idea • Magistrate pulled out cross ○ Asked if narrator believed in God, said no ○ Narrator agreed to what he was saying (his tactic of trying to get rid of someone he's not really listening to (pg. 69) ○ Asked again if he believed in God, said no again ○ Asked if he was sorry
