• Worked hard in the office, boss was nice ○ "asked if I wasn't too tired and he also wanted to know Maman's age" (pg. 25) ○ About 60 years old ○ Boss "seemed to be relieved somehow and to consider the matter closed" (pg. 25) • Didn’t like washing his hands after lunch because the roller towled he uses is soaked thru ○ "one towel has to last all day" (pg. 25) • Office overlooks the sea • Salamano: old neighbor across the landing ○ Spaniel - inseparable § Mange - all of hair falls out and leaves it covered with brown sores and scabs ○ Look like each other ○ Salamano: reddish scabs on face and wispy yellow hair ○ They hate each other ○ 2x a day at 11 and 6:00 - go out for a walk ○ Dog pulls him until Salamano stumbles § Beats dog and swears at it § Then man pulls dog § After a bit, dog forgets and drags Salamano and then beaten and worn at again § Dog stares at master in terror, man in hatred

○ Same thing everyday (page 27) • Raymond Sintes: ○ Fought a man - some woman's brother § She was cheating on him § "he'd been giving her just enough to live on. He paid the rent on her room and gave her 2- fancs a day for food" (pg. 30) § She complained they couldn't make ends meet □ He found lottery ticket in her purse, couldn't explain where she got the money for it - realized § He beat her until she bled ○ Kept calling narrator Monsieur Meursault § Finally stopped and called him "pal" ○ Wanted to send a letter to the woman § He couldn't write the kind of letter it would take and that he'd thought of asking narrator to write it for him • Went out for a smoke with Raymond Sintes ○ Quiet, all he could hear: blood poudning in ears and the dog whimpering softly in Salamano's room...
