• Narrator woke up not feeling well ○ Couldn't wake up ○ Drained with headache ○ "my cigarette tasted bitter" (pg. 47) • Raymond: got off with a warning ○ Narrator testified saying girl cheated • Raymond: liked Marie ○ Flirted with her with jokes • Masson: Raymond's friend who invited them to the beach ○ Lived in a little wooden bungalow at the far end of the beach • "He told me that he spent Saturdays and Sundays and all his days off there. 'With my wife, of course," he added. Just then his wife was laughing with Marie For the first time maybe, I really thought I was going to get married." (pg. 50) • "…but Marie told me I hadn't kissed her since that morning. It was true, and yet I had wanted to… I felt her legs wrapped around mine and I wanted her." (pg. 51) • Arabs (connected to the Raymond's girl) were on the beach ○ Fought ○ Raymond: slashed by the Arab ("his man") on the arm and mouth was cut open • Narrator went back to the beach to walk, saw the arab man who slashed Raymond ○ Walked towards him ○ Arab flashed his knife ○ Narrator pulled trig
