EMOTION DETECTION ABILITIES You have just completed an emotion detection task. This task is like those used in many different types of research studies on emotion. Next, please open up the document Activity 8 Emotion Scoring Key and complete the evaluation and questions below. For each of the three emotion sets you completed on the previous pages, look at the answer key and highlight or bold which faces you correctly identified. Then type in your score below for each set out of 10 (Number Correct). This will give you an accuracy score (i.e., 6 out of 10 = 60%). Record this in the chart below as well.

Emotion Set Emotion Set 1 (primary) Emotion Set 2 (secondary) Emotion Set 3 (secondary videos)

Number Correct 7/10 6/10 9/10

Accuracy Score 70% 60% 90%

Please type your responses to the questions below. Consider your accuracy scores as you answer each of the following questions. All responses should be a minimum of 4-5 sentences and should demonstrate your understanding and application of the activity to course material.

1.

Discuss the accuracy scores that you obtained on all three emotion sets. Are you surprised by your scores? Why or why not? Why do you think you scored the way you did?

I am not surprised by my scores as many of the emotions I got wrong were very similar. With all the answers I got wrong, they were very close to the correct emotion. Having acting experience myself, I also felt like the photos and videos were not always an accurate representation of the emotion especially since the display of emotion is sometimes up to the actors discretion. I also found that I scored much higher on the video portion of the activity than the still image section. I believe seeing the emotions displayed in a live setting allowed me to pick up on smaller facial ques much better. Overall I feel like I did well and picked up on the specific and general emotion of the individuals.

2.

In general, what factors do you think influence a person’s ability to accurately detect emotional expressions? Discuss at least two factors, as well as what things improved or impaired your own ability to detect emotions across these sets.

I think experience can largely affect the ability to accurately detect emotional expressions. Due to my acting experience, as well as nursing, I have seen the display of many emotions on patients and fellow actors, allowing me to gain experience at identifying the possible emotion they are expressing. I believe empathy also plays a large role in detection of emotions as some people may not be interested in the emotions of others, and therefore put no effort into attempting to detect and understand. If someone is more empathetic, they may be able to pick up on smaller ques and hints. Understanding why someone might be feeling a particular emotion can also aid in identifying the displayed emotion. 3.

Cultural context is identified as an important part of emotion recognition and interpretation of nonverbal behavior. Apart from display rules, discuss several other ways that culture might influence emotion recognition. Link your explanations to information in your textbook.

A “cultural display rule” is a culturally specific standard that governs the types and frequencies of emotional displays considered acceptable by a given culture. Despite these different emotional display rules, the ability to recognize and produce basic facial expressions of emotion appears to be universal. Research has discovered seven “primary emotions” expressed in human faces. This includes happiness, sadness, disgust, surprise, anger, contempt, and fear (pg. 403, Recognition of Emotions Across Cultures). However, complex emotions such as jealousy, love, and pride are different from primary emotions and are more likely to be dependent on cultural influences than are more basic emotions. Cultural influences may affect emotion recognition as traditional customs and experiences may influence the perception of actions and emotional ques. The textbook explains an experiment demonstrating the different reactions between two cultural groups when watching a gory film. It was seen that the Japanese students masked their emotions when being watched by an older experimenter. In this aspect, I believe some cultures may not be able to quickly recognize some emotions as they are not accustomed to seeing emotions prominently displayed (pg. 404)....
