Description

Capture: Chapter 2

I. When developing your speech, do so with your audience in mind.

II. 1. Your Audience  How do you want the audience to respond? (Must be Realistic Desired Response)  Willing to pay attention if they will gain something from it (Provide Useful/Beneficial Information)

 Willing to pay attention to satisfy their interests (Provide something that is both Captivating and Engaging)  TED.com is a Perfect Example  Consider what they know/Their education level (Effects Terminology & Word Choice) 2. What is your Audience's Type?  A Favorable Audience  Usually Supportive & Attentive  The more effectively you can reinforce their positive attitude, the more likely you will be able to move them to action  An Indifferent Audience  Stimulate their Interests (Why they should listen)  Trigger their Curiosity  An Opposed Audience  Dislike your Subject & Point of View  Hard to change their Mindsets 3. Listening Needs (Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs)  Physiological Needs (The Base)  Water, Food, Air  Safety Needs  Personal Security, Health, Employment  Belonging Needs  Be Loved, Intimacy, Family, Sense of Connection  Esteem Needs  Respect, Status, Recognition, Worth, Freedom/Choice, Self-Worth  Self-Actualization  Desire to Reach one's Potential, Be Unique, step out of Comfort Zone, Go against the Grain

III. I found this chapter to be very informational. I know personally that when I am asked to give a speech or a talk, I do what I am most comfortable with, regardless of who my audience is. I do what I feel like I know the most about or even something that I am passionate about. However, this is not the appropriate way I should go about things. Instead, I need to first think about my audience, where they are from, how old they are, their likes and dislikes, then I need to research and find a message the would both be meaningful and helpful to them. I know that this is going to be a little challenging and difficult for me, but I am excited to see how this method can potentially improve my delivery and effectiveness when giving a speech....
