Purpose Plan Worksheet A...

Description

Name: Amanda Bohannon Course: UNV-108 Date: November 16, 2020 Instructor: Dr. Thomas Christner Purpose Plan Worksheet For this assignment, complete Parts 1, 2, and 3. Use the GCU website and the Student Success Center to find answers. Part 1: Academics Early Childhood and Special Education (Birth – 3rd grade/Age 8) In which COE specific program of study are you enrolled? Identify the required courses in your program.

University Foundations, Effective Communication, Christian Worldview, Critical Thinking, Global Awareness, Perspective and Ethics

In addition to Student Teaching, which courses in your program require practicum/field experience hours (Refer to course descriptions on the GCU.edu website)?

On the course descriptions webpage, it states I must complete a 16-week student teaching experience. This will be 8 weeks in a K-3 special education classroom and 8 weeks in a K-3 general education classroom. It does not state any other field experience hours. It does, however, state a teaching licensure program is required.

Which courses do you anticipate being the most challenging? Why?

Christian Worldview will be a challenge for me, as I am a spiritual, nondenominational person. I do not believe in simply one God or one religion. I believe each religion has its own faith-based properties and one should base their beliefs individually. I also anticipate all the math courses to be a challenge, as math is one of my weaker subjects. Math always gives me anxiety.

What skills or resources will you

According the GCU website, the ability to think critically, communicate clearly and live responsibly in a diverse world are all skills needed to work in education, as well © 2020. Grand Canyon University. All Rights Reserved.

need for this program of study and how will you acquire them?

special education. I feel you also need a lot of patience, self-control, and knowledge to be successful in this field. You can find several resources through GCU such as webinars, journal articles and many books. Outside of GCU, most any school or program that serves special needs persons, will allow you to observe or intern to gain more experience.

After exploring the resources on the COE page within the Student Success Center, which resources will be the most helpful to you?

I found many resources for my field of study. I am really excited about the lesson plans and templates resource, as lesson plans need to be a bit different than what I am used to, for children with more severe special needs. Practicum and field experience will be helpful as well as it will give me even more knowledge by doing.

Part 2: Spirituality How does the One Foundation video (https://vimeo.com/282365322) discuss the integration of faith, learning, and work at GCU? (https://www.gcu.edu/whygcu/christian-identity-and-mission)

The One Foundation video discusses leading faith into the structures of classrooms making it relate to the curriculum. It provides the opportunity to students to practice their faith and learn to be themselves while supporting them.

How do you plan to integrate your personal or spiritual growth into your academic journey?

I plan to integrate my personal belief system and knowledge of the history of religions into my academic journey. I will do this by relying on what is right, honesty and having faith in myself.

Consider the following list of GCU spiritual resources. Discuss how you might use some of the resources during your academic career.

I think the spiritual life page will be the most useful resources offered because it allows each student to explore their own individual spiritual life. It will be a great resource in encouraging being a disciple to better this world. The student led ministry allows students to have a say in how they make their college life the absolute best for them.

Part 3: Practicum/Field Experience Complete the following based on information regarding Practicum/Field Experience under “Program and Course Resources” on the College of Education page in the Student Success Center. 

After watching “Overview of Practicum/Field Experience Requirements” for (Ground/Arizona students) or (Online/Non-Arizona students),” provide three examples of practicum/field experience requirements.

1. Students will be required to intern in their specific field and must complete 16 weeks. 2. A clinical field experience verification form is required to be verified by the correct authority. 3. Fingerprint clearance cards and a background check is also required. 

After reading the “Practicum/Field Experience Tip Sheet,” describe how you would introduce yourself to a potential classroom teacher. Hello, I am Amanda Bohannon, and I am a student at Grand Canyon University. I am studying Early Childhood Education in preschool and Special needs for preschool aged children. I would like to gain more experience in my field of study by doing an internship with your classroom. I have 10 years’ experience professionally in childcare, 3 of those with special needs children. I would love the opportunity to work alongside you to gain more experience.

For one of the courses in your program listed in the Practicum/Field Experience Fact Sheet, list the required hours and setting. Think about a potential site where you might complete the required hours and provide details on how that site will provide a valuable experience.

ECS-320, Child Guidance and Classroom Management for Typical and Atypical Behaviors, requires 20 hours and is best done in grades kindergarten through 3 rd grade. It does require an inclusive classroom setting. I would find this in any public elementary school. I would benefit here as it would allow me to create a behavior plan, have it implemented and see the results in the child. 

After learning about the Participant Roles in the “Clinical Field Experience Handbook,” list the five participant roles. Describe how each might help you successfully complete your practicum/field experience requirements.

All candidates must complete all coursework as well as all the associated requirements. 2. Classroom Teacher/Mentor Teacher: This is the teacher hosting the candidate. They focus on modeling instructional practices, lesson planning and providing feedback on the candidate’s performance. instructional practice, planning instructional lessons with students, and providing feedback on students’ performance. 3. Course Instructor: This is the university faculty member assigned to teach the course. They are responsible for implementing assignments related to the candidate’s field of study. 4. Field Experience Counselor (FEC): This is person who supports students in meeting supplementary requirements including fingerprint clearance, testing requirements, clinical field experiences/practicums, student teaching and Institutional Recommendation. They also verify eligibility, advise requirements and assistance. They usually work with the candidates Student Services Counselor to make sure they are completing all areas of study needed for their degree. 5. Teacher Placement Counselor (TPC): This person is a university staff member who is responsible for holding district relationships and sets up student teaching for the candidate. They also communicate all placements, courses, roles, and expectations to the student

Reflection: In 75-100 words, reflect on the following: 

Describe what leadership/management strategies (ex. setting goals, managing a schedule, addressing student needs, etc.) you will add to your toolbox to further your success in future practicum sites and in your future classroom. (1.3)

I will add better goal setting, sticking to a schedule, team building and inclusion to my toolbox. Having better goals will challenge me to strive for higher goals and implement them in my daily life as a preschool teacher. Setting and sticking to a schedule will help with time management and completion of goals. Team building and inclusion will allow me to learn to bring other people in to help me and them with challenging tasks. These three strategies will make me a better person as well as student. 

Describe how you can engage with various GCU communities, virtually or face-to-face, to enhance your networking capabilities. (1.4)

I will attend webinars, class meetings and lectures online to learn and enhance my networking capabilities. By attending these, I will learn of resources to help me find places to go and observe, as well as dive more into the knowledge I need to be a successful student which will lead me in my professional career. I feel also attending seminars and speaking with other people in my field of study will help me build my network.
