refund period, it is up to you to officially drop the class before the end of the 16 week period if you want a withdrawal (with a “W” recorded) from the class, and not a letter grade. Missed Work/Documented Absences The Student Appeal Form is available to students who would like to request an exception to current School of Professional Studies policy and procedure. The appeal form is used for students who need to request an extension of time to their 16 weeks. To request an appeal form and discuss your situation, please contact [email protected]. Completed appeal forms are reviewed by a committee within two weeks. Successful appeals will be based on well documented extenuating circumstances beyond the student’s control. NOTE: If a student does not complete a semester exam or final exam by the 16-week completion, they will receive a zero for the incomplete exam. Not taking the final exam is grounds for failing the course. Grading and Evaluation Methods You have the flexibility to study and complete your assignments at a time and place of your convenience in this course. Keep in mind however that the rigor of this course is the same (some say greater) as that of the “on-campus” course. Depending on how easily you grasp the material (and it will change from chapter to chapter), plan on spending up to 3 hours for every hour of lecture in the module. The class structure is set up to encourage you to schedule your time so that you are able to complete the homework, assignments, and exams within the 16-week period. The schedule for all assignments, such as homework, and exams are set for the term according to the course modules which would follow the 14-week timeline. Final Exam review and completion of final exam will be reserved for the remaining weeks in the 16week period. Look at the course module overview at this time and make sure that you establish a suitable schedule to complete the chapter modules and semester exams. Your grade in this course will be based on your ability to successfully complete the required chapter readings, complete homework and completing the module activities before each of the scheduled graded semester exams and final cumulative exam. To help you succeed in the course, you will be required to actively participate in this course by completing required EdPuzzle activities for completion of each module, and optional attendance of scheduled online Collaborate/Zoom sessions. Any course assignments and/or exams not submitted by the end of the 16-week period will be assigned a grade of zero. • Syllabus Quiz. A MANDATORY online syllabus quiz must be completed with an achieved grade of 100% to gain access to the ‘course content’ modules. If you fail to complete the syllabus quiz within the first five days of the course, you may be withdrawn for non-attendance/non-participation. The syllabus quiz will be administered online in Blackboard with Respondus Lockdown & Monitoring (WebCam) enabled. •Online Collaborate/Zoom Sessions. These sessions are online with the instructor covering course content and Exam Reviews. Sessions are scheduled throughout the semester. These sessions will also be recorded to allow those to go back over the review and for the benefit of those who are unable to attend the session live. It is to your benefit to make time to view the recorded sessions if you are not able to participate in the live session! Each Student is required to attend a WELCOME Course Orientation Session. Email the instructor once you have completed the ‘course introduction’ an syllabus quiz to schedule a session time. Additional session date and times will be announced in Blackboard and are optional. • Chapter Materials. All students are 100% responsible for all material covered in the assigned text readings, chapter powerpoints, and online notes/videos. In general, it is good practice in all science courses to go over the material covered in the course at least three times. The first is a quick scan to survey the topics and concepts being covered. The second is for comprehension to understand the fundamental idea – completing the homework. The third, but by no means the last, is to review and reflect on the concepts that you had just covered. If you need to review a concept go back and read the material again, attend review sessions, attempt additional practice problems provided or seek outside help. If you use this study habit approach, you will achieve a level of understanding that will allow you to be successful in this course. •Proctored Online Exams. There will be three semester hour exams online and one final exam online with Respondus Lockdown & Monitoring (WebCam) enabled. In general, the proctored and timed semester exams (one hour) will be worth 100 points and will cover all of the material since the last exam. A cumulative final exam worth 250 points will be given during the last full week of the 16-week scheduled time – see course modules for scheduled exams. My Dr. Carmela Magliocchi Byrnes

exams tend to be of a problem solving nature and credit is given for what is done correctly. No credit will be given for incorrect numerical answers. By taking the exams online and once you begin, you agree that you are adhering to the academic honesty policy for the exam. Semester exams will be available after specific course modules are completed with the alotted time indicated – only one attempt allowed for each of the proctored online exams. •Online Homework/Module Assignments. Homework will be assigned for every chapter using a combination of Smartwork5 (see Smartwork5 information page in syllabus) and Module assignments. Homework assignments are self-paced according to the course modules and must be completed by the end of week 14 . If course module assignments are missed or not completed by the end of 14 weeks - prior to the final exam for the course, you may be administratively withdrawn from the course for non-attendance/non-participation and/or insufficient time to complete the course. It is encouraged to do the problems, as you may find these extremely similar to those on the exams. •Final Exam. An online proctored cumulative final exam (Chapter 1-9) must be completed to pass the course. The cumulative final exam will be administered online in Blackboard with Respondus Lockdown & Monitoring (WebCam) enable. Not taking the final exam is grounds for failing the course. •Grades. Grades on each assignment will be posted in the Blackboard grade center. It is your responsibility to keep a personal copy of all assignments/projects/proposals posted so your work can be resubmitted if there is a posting or transmission error. All exams are cumulative. There will be no individual extra credit assignments. Tutoring •CASE Tutoring Sessions. CHE 131E has CHE 131 tutors available at the CASE center. The sessions are free and tutors are former CHE 131 students who will be available for one-on-one and small group peer tutoring sessions – on campus or virtual sessions. The sessions are designed to help you practice problem-solving exercises and are available by appointment. Please use the link to sign up: https://mcphs.mywconline.com/ •Online Tutoring Sessions. The University offers free, online tutoring services through TutorMe . This service is available 24/7 and covers over 300 subject areas. To access TutorMe and be connected with a live tutor, select the “Tools” option in Blackboard. Tutoring services are offered on demand and appointments are not required. Each session may be archived and accessed at any time throughout the course. Grade Calculations: Grades will be determined based on student’s performance in the course. Lecture: 3 Hour Exams ( online) = 300 pts 10 Homework Assignments (online) = 250 pts 10 Module Assignments – EdPuzzle/Activity = 100 pts Exam Reviews = 60 pts Participation – Collaborate/Zoom/Tutoring = 40 pts Final Exam (Cumulative - online ) = 250 pts Total = 1000 pts Final grades will be based on the students’ weighted percentage in the course. Exams – online (@ 100 pts each) Homework Module Assignments – EdPuzzle/Activities Exam Reviews Participation – Collaborate/Zoom/Tutoring Final Exam (Cumulative - proctored) Total
