The four controlling factors are the changing angle and duration of the sun, large scale weather systems, urban areas, and Lake Michigan.

3) As best as you can, explain the Urban Heat Island.

A urban heat island is when land is covered concentrations of buildings and other structures which absorb heat.

4) Using the growing days map, what is the approximate length, in days, of Chicago’s growing season? How does the urban heat island and warmth of lake Michigan play a role in these higher numbers? About 180-185,

5) Using the climate table slide, tell me the average ANNUAL high and low temperature and the number of days the temperature reaches 90 degrees or higher. The annual high and low are 59.5 and 43 The number of days temperature reaches over 90 is 16.7

6) Using the other climate table slide tell me the ANNUAL average amount of rain and snowfall.

The annual average of rain is 37.86 and the snow is 38.4

7) What are the three key messages about the changing climate of Illinois?

Key message 1: The average annual temperature has increased by one degree since the 1900s, and seasonal average going up by 2 degrees. Key message 2: Precipitation has increased greatly in summer and spring causing both positive and negative effects for farming and the weather is expected to continue increasing. Key message 3: Severe flooding and drought have occurred in recent years and with the increase of precipitation makes it so the floods and droughts will keep getting more severe.
