Introduction: a. Clearly state the problem: childhood obesity has become an epidemic in the US today b. General background: i. GB sentence 1: The estimated 9 million overweight children—including 4.5 million obese children—are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus, heart disease, cancer, asthma and other pulmonary diseases, high cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, stroke, and other chronic illnesses (Wieting, 2008) ii. GB sentence 2: In the United States, the percentage of children and adolescents affected by obesity has more than tripled since the 1970s.1 Data from 2015– 2016 show that nearly 1 in 5 school-age children and young people aged 6 to 19 years in the United States has obesity (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018) iii. GB sentence 3: with the number of children that are considered obese it is no wonder that the US has declared childhood obesity as an epidemic c. Thesis statement: an effective way to address the problem of childhood obesity is to make children get 60 minutes of physical activity daily, limiting their screen time, as well as providing healthier lunches at schools Body paragraph 1: (explain the significance of the problem) a. Topic sentence: over the last 50 years childhood obesity has become an epidemic in the US b. Supporting sentence 1: childhood obesity puts children at risk for major health issues c. Supporting sentence 2: children how are obese are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and any other diseases. d. Supporting sentence 3: if a child is obese when they are younger, they are more likely to be obese when they become adults e. Supporting sentence 4: if obesity follows children into adulthood then the child is at an even greater risk for health problems f. Supporting sentence 5: childhood obesity also can cause children to have anxiety and depression as well as low self-esteem and are more likely to be bullied g. Conclusion sentence: the epidemic of childhood obesity has become an enormous problem in the US h. Intro to solution 1: one way to solve childhood obesity as by making sure children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily Body paragraph 2: (explain 1st solution) a. Topic sentence: how to solve childhood obesity by making children get 60 minutes of physical activity daily b. Supporting sentence 1: Physical activity helps decrease the risk of childhood obesity, controls children’s weight, reduces fat as well as promoting muscle and joint development. c. Supporting sentence 2: Children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous activity every day to grow up to a healthy weight.

Supporting sentence 3: if schools increased the time that children spend in gym class as well as recess schools could make sure children are getting the 60 minutes of physical activity children need daily e. Supporting sentence 4: another way to promote physical activity to children is to make it a family event, an easy way to do this is to take a weekly hike together or to take children to the park after school daily f. Supporting sentence 5: also making extracurriculars for children at a more afford rate so all children can participate in them no matter what their family’s money situation is g. Supporting sentence 6: when a child is active, they can properly burn off the calories that they take in through a proper and healthy outlet h. Conclusion sentence: getting children to be physical active for 60 minutes a day while help put a stop to childhood obesity i. Supporting sentence 1: children nowadays are obsessed with their phones and are too focused on their phones instead of being physical active l. Supporting sentence 2: children will sit ideal for hours at a time just staring at a screen if we limit this to 30-60 minutes of screen time a day and encourage children to go outside to play or to play with their non-electronic toys. m. Supporting sentence 3: children also will just snack aimlessly while they are on their electrics which is just extra calories because they aren’t doing anything to burn those calories n. Supporting sentence 4: limiting screen times especially when a child is eating helps them realize how much they are eating and when they are full because they are only focused on reading o. Supporting sentence 5: taking the focus from screens also will develop a better dialog as a family if you eat together, this gives an opportunity to teach children about serving sizes and the proper amounts they need from each food group p. Intro to solution 3: lastly, schools providing healthier lunches can help solve childhood obesity Body paragraph 4: (explain 3rd solution) s. Supporting sentence 1: providing healthier school lunches can make sure children get the proper amount of everything they need from each food group u. Supporting sentence 2: only offering healthy school lunches will help children learn what is good for them to eat v. Supporting sentence 3: it also provides children who can’t afford the healthier options outside of school

w. Supporting sentence 4: a lot of children eat 5-10 meals a week at school depending if they eat breakfast at school only offering healthy options promotes them always having a healthy diet x. Supporting sentence 5: Kids consume up to 50 percent of their daily calories at school: More than 30 million students eat school lunches, and 14 million eat school breakfasts. Research shows that availability of healthier school lunches has already improved kids’ eating habits. (Black, 2016) y. Conclusion sentence: providing healthier school lunches can solve childhood obesity Conclusion: a. Restatement of thesis: some of the solutions to helping end the childhood obesity epidemic are making sure children get 60 of physical activity daily, limiting children’s screen time, as well as providing healthier school lunches. b.
