Children Need To Play, Not Compete Jessica Statsky Questions: 1. How does Statsky present the issue in a way that prepares readers for her argument? _ When she mentioned the sentence: “When overzealous parents and coaches adult standards on children’s sports, the result can be activities that are neither satisfying nor beneficial to children”, she supported the main issue apparently based on the obligation on children’s sports from parents and coaches, as well as, attract readers to focus on this issue from the first paragraph of this reading one more time to prepare for her upcoming argument after all. 2. How does Statsky qualify her position in par.2? _ As her position, she put her point of view into the paragraph two to show readers the real picture about children sports‘ s situation these days. 3. What reasons does Statsky forecast here, and in which paragraphs does she discuss each reason? Do her reasons appeal primarily to readers’ intellect (logos), to their sense of fairness and what’s credible (ethos), or to their feelings (pathos)? _ The reason she forecast here is the force to children when they play sports and make them to become competitive from the adult, especially parents and coaches. There are three paragraphs she discuss each reason are paragraph 3 to 5. Her reasons appeal to their sense of fairness and somewhat credible as ethos. 4 How does Statsky try to establish the credibility of her sources in pars.3-5 (ethos)?

_ She started the credibility with a clear, logical organization about physical actions are bad for growing bodies with all the sources for a well-supported position to prove that this is not a right thing to do to children 5 Why do you think Statsky uses block quotations instead of integrating these quotes into her own sentences? _ Because she wants to emphasize the different reaction between children and adults, especially coaches to the children’s pain. 6 How does Statsky try to refute this objection? _ She gives out the effective response about “winning and losing” in the competition for children. Additionally, there are some reasons that she listed it out are: + Affect a child’s development. + They can become discouraged and depressed due to the high expectations of adults. _ Furthermore, she mentions the statistic about 80 to 90 children who play competitive sports at a young age will drop out by sixteen according to Dr. Glyn C. Roberts to show the relevance to her response also. 7 How effective do you think Statsky’s argument in par.7 is? Why? _ She starts with an argument to the statistics about competitive sports for children with a well-supported position with the reasons that few children get to participate in a team due to the highly selective. Because she pointed that the obligations does not come from the adult, it may be come from the outside world.

8 In criticizing some parents’ behavior in pars. 8-9, Statsky risks alienating her readers. How effective is this part of her argument?

9 How effective is Statsky’s use of concession and refutation here? _ In my opinion, she thinks about the reality more than the aspect of children who play sports. Because there are a lot of things that we have to encounter and being competitive such as business, admission in college or university, etc. Therefore, when she uses the concession and refutation in the paragraph 10, we can understand how thoughtful she is to the society as well. Otherwise, this is a reminder for adult to take a slow down when children play competitive sports. 10 How effectively does Statsky conclude her argument? _ She summarizes the main point of this reading about duty of playing sports from children to become a good team, not an enemy. Besides, she gives out an option for children. Instead of doing benefit from competitive sports, children should practice and help each other in a team with many good characteristics such as cooperation, sportsmanship, etc and it it closed to the idiom: “To kill two birds with one stone.” Summary of the reading: This reading tells a story about how children are being forced to play sports with highly competitive from the adult, especially parents and coaches. The author, Jessica Statsky, listed out some reasons that make this problem seems to be bad to children about health, physical bodies and many more. Furthermore, she gave some arguments about many different aspects from this problem too. It can be the result, the outside world, etc. Obviously, she could predict that the

dangerous and harmful to children if it still happens. Consequently, she hoped that this is a real mirror that could reflect the wrong actions of adult to children, as well as, the reminder for parents, children and other people to have a fair play to each other even playing sports or not....
