Jones 1 Kayla Jones Ms. Schmitt ENGL1101-27 13 September 2016 Chocolate Cake Buying a cake in a box at the store is easy, and it never takes a long time to make either. All you have to do is put the mix in a bowl with a couple eggs, pop it in the oven, and viola, you have a cake. However, there is something special about making a cake from scratch that is so much better. For example, getting all of your ingredients together, mixing them, baking, and frosting your very own cake, let you see how delightful it tastes, time and time again, until you have eaten every last bite. Could it be how mouth wateringly delicious it is when it’s all done? How about the pure satisfaction you get from knowing that you made that cake all by yourself? Whatever the answer may be, baking a cake is something that everyone can enjoy, especially if it is done with family or friends. First things first, you need to gather all of the ingredients. You will need three-fourth cup of softened butter, three eggs, two cups of sugar, two cups of flour, three-fourth cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, one teaspoon of baking soda, three-fourth teaspoon of baking powder, two teaspoons of vanilla, and one and a half cups of milk. Now that you have everything you need in order to make a cake, it’s time to start mixing. Before you get to mix all of the ingredients, you will need to preheat the oven to three hundred and fifty degrees. Also, you are going to need to grease and flour three, six inch by oneand-a-half-inch, round cake pans. Next, you get to the ingredients. Mix together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda, then, set this to the side. Once that is done, grab a large bowl, and beat the butter, eggs, and vanilla on medium to high speed for about three to four

Jones 2 minutes, and slowly add sugar. While this is mixing together, you need to alternately add in the other mixture, as well as milk, to the batter until it is smooth. Once you finish mixing, you’re ready to bake the cake. Pour the batter into the three cake pans, and make sure there is an equal amount of batter in each one. By now, the oven should be heated to the correct temperature, and the cakes can go into the oven where they will bake for thirty to thirty-five minutes. Meanwhile, you can begin making the delicious chocolate frosting, also from scratch. To make the frosting, you will need two cups of softened, unsalted butter, three tablespoons of milk, twelve ounces of melted, warm, semisweet chocolate, one and a half teaspoons of vanilla extract, and three cups of powdered sugar. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter until it is nice and smooth. This should take around three minutes. Then, add the milk and vanilla, and continue to beat. Next, add in the melted chocolate, and beat this mixture for an additional three minutes. Lastly, add the powdered sugar, and beat until this entire mixture is creamy. Now that you have your delicious frosting, all you have to do is frost the cake. Once the time needed for cooking is up, and you have the heavenly aroma of warm, sweet chocolate floating through every room of your house, check that the cake is done by putting a toothpick into it, and if the toothpick comes out clean, that means the cake is finished. Unfortunately, you can’t enjoy your masterpiece yet because you can’t frost a blazing hot cake, so you have to wait for it to cool. Therefore, you have a little bit of free time on your hands to do anything that you want so that the frosting can go on smoothly. The last step in the process is, of course, frosting the cake so that you can enjoy your wonderful creation and share it with your family and friends; that is, if you don’t want to keep

Jones 3 the dessert all for yourself. To do this, you will put your first cake layer on a round cake plate, and spread frosting over the top. You will then continue to do this, adding each layer on top of the last one, until all three layers are stacked up on the cake plate. Finally, you will spread icing on the top of the cake and on the sides, making sure to smooth out the frosting, so it will be appealing to the eyes as well as to the taste buds. This process may have been lengthy, but it is always worth it when you’re finished. Once you taste the moist, spongy chocolate cake and the creamy, chocolate frosting, you’ll see why this is true. Again, you could always run to the store, and pick up a cake in a box and some frosting that is already made, but you will never get that satisfactory feeling that comes from eating a cake that you know is a result of your own hard work....
