Abstr Abstract act The researcher’s main purpose in conducting this study is to make a product which is less expensive but high in quality like the other hand sanitizers. This study will help those people who cannot afford expensive hand sanitizers to make their own sanitizer using affordable materials. Washing your hands using water will not remove all the bacteria in your hands, so hand sanitizer is a must. In today’s situation, the virus named as Coronavirus starts spreading here in our country. In order to avoid the said virus, people were advised to have clean hands always. Through this hand sanitizer, people can clean their hands even if there’s no water available for washing hands and might be safe from the virus.

Acknowledgement With a grateful heart, the researcher would like to give her sincere gratitude to the people who supported her in conducting this study. First, her family and friends, who gave their help to complete this project, second, to my teacher who encourages us that we can make this project successfully and for making this project possible. And last but not the least, to our almighty God, our source of wisdom, knowledge and understanding that has provided all that was needed in order for this project to be successful and who has been the source of the researcher’s strength.

CHAPTER I

Introd Introduction uction People who tend to have a proper hygiene always wanted to be neat and clean. Whenever the hands are dirty, they always wash it through water and soap. But, not all the time you can carry the faucet inside your pockets or bags, so some uses hand sanitizers to clean their hands. Citrus fruits like calamansi and oranges are often used to season dishes, preserve food, remove stains in clothing, and deodorize and whiten the skin. Like calamansi, it is often combined with soy sauce as a dipping sauce and spritzed on pansit canton. Oranges are usually used in making tasty juice. These fruits are not only for the sake of someone’s taste buds, but it can also be a good bacteria remover because of its acidic characteristic.

Background of the Study These days, people are really prone to diseases just by simply touching a dirty thing, and commonly the hands are one of the suspects on why a person usually has germs in the body that sometimes causes to be ill. But not all bacteria that the people have are bad; there are some bacteria that are good for the body that helps the body

function properly. That’s why the researcher decided to make citrofortunella hand sanitizer to fight off the bad ones. The researcher chose to make a hand sanitizer using citrus fruits because of its affordable price. Calamansi and oranges can be easily found in the market and some in the backyard. Another factor why the researcher chose this study is because of its vitamin C which is also good for the skin.

Statement of the Problem The study strives to answer the following questions: •

Does the citrofortunella hand sanitizer better than alcohol?

Does it make the hands dry?

Does it kill a significant amount of bacteria and other microorganisms?

Hypothesis Citrofortunella hand sanitizer is better than alcohol and will not make the hands dry. Hand sanitizer made with citrus fruits does kill a significant amount of bacteria and other microorganisms.

Significance of the Study The study will be of significance to the following: •

Students: The hand sanitizer will protect the student’s hands from bacteria. Also, the hand sanitizer will clean the student’s hands and will give a good scent.

People in squatter’s area: Squatter’s area doesn’t have a good and clean environment. This hand sanitizer will help those people living in the squatter’s area to have clean hands and to avoid illnesses.

People who work in hospitals: Aside from water and soap, the hand sanitizer will help the doctors, nurses, janitors, and patients to prevent viruses.

Bank employees: Employees in the bank usually holds money and this object is very dirty, so this hand sanitizer will help them to clean their hands while doing their work.

The Citrofortunella Hand Sanitizer can be significant through helping our hands to be clean and germ free. Instead of using water and spending time in going to the faucets, we can simply use this hand sanitizer.

Scope and Limitation of the Study This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Citrofortunella hand sanitizer as a substitute of soap and water. It shows how citrus fruits like calamansi and orange can be used as an antibacterial hand sanitizer.

Definition of T Terms erms The researchers cited these following terms in order for the readers to understand more about the study. These terms are: Aloe ver vera a - a gelatinous substance obtained from a kind of aloe, used especially in cosmetics as an emollient and for the treatment of burns. Calamondin - Calamondin, also known as calamansi, is an economically-important citrus hybrid predominantly cultivated in the Philippines. Glycerine - is used as a moisturizer to treat or prevent dry, rough, scaly, itchy skin and minor skin irritations (e.g., diaper rash, skin burns from radiation therapy). Ethanol - a colorless volatile flammable liquid which is produced by the natural fermentation of sugars; alcohol. Hand sanitizer – is a liquid generally used to decrease infectious agents on the hands. Microorganism - a microscopic organism, especially a bacterium, virus, or fungus. Moisturizers Moisturizers- help retain moisture on dry and rough skin. Texture – the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance. Fragr Fragrance ance - is an aroma, especially one that is pleasant, or a substance which gives a pleasant aroma such as a perfume, cologne or after-shave. Hydromethanolic – relating to a mixture of water and methanol.

Germs - a microorganism, especially one which causes disease. Pol Polymethoxylated ymethoxylated flavo flavones nes - are found in the peel tissues of some citrus species. Citrus sinensis - probably native to southern China; widely cultivated as source of table and juice oranges.

CHAPTER II Re Review view of R Related elated Liter Literature ature Citrus fruits are notable for their fragrance. The juice contains a high quality of citric acid giving them their characteristic sharp flavor. The genius is commercially important as many species are cultivated for their fruit, which is eaten fresh pressed for juice, or preserved in marmalades and pickles. Hand sanitizers have a form of alcohol, such as ethyl alcohol, as an active ingredient. It works as an antiseptic. Other ingredients may include water, fragrance, and glycerin. According to Lynna May Bocala, (2014), calamansi or calamondin belongs to the citrus family. It is a fruit tree native in the Philippines. The tree is low set, spreading and well branched. The leaves are broad and oval and dark green to pale green on the upper and lower surfaces, respectively. The fruit is usually small and round, ranging from 3.0 to 3.0 inches in diameter. The rind may be thin or thick. Calamansi is a rich source of vitamin C. Its juice is used as a flavoring ingredient or as an additive in various food preparations. The pulp can be utilized in beverages, syrups, concentrates, and purees; whereas, the peel can be need in making jams, candies and marmalade. With its alkalinizing effect calamansi helps blood circulate energy and facilitates normal digestion.

The in vitro antibacterial and antioxidant properties of hydromethanolic extract of peel from Citrus sinensis (Sweet orange) was investigated. In this study the antibacterial activity of Citrus sinensis peel extract against different gram positive and gram negative bacteria by disc diffusion method and antioxidant activity by Fenton reaction was undertaken. Citrus sinensis peels had shown mild activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria and the MIC value was measured. Aloe vera contains natural moisturizers that help retain moisture on dry and rough skin. After you are finished sanitizing, the alcohol will evaporate off of your hand killing the germs, and the aloe vera in hand sanitizer will remain and form a protective layer on your skin leaving it soft for you. A hand sanitizer that does not contain aloe vera will typically dry out your hands because of the high content of alcohol in it. In order to be effective, a hand sanitizer should contain at least 60% alcohol in it according to theCenters for Disease Control. Hand sanitizers without alcohol generally do not work as well for all classes of germs and they may just reduce the growth of germs and not kill them outright. Additionally, hand sanitizers without alcohol may be more likely than those with alcohol to irritate and dry out the user’s hands. A hand antiseptic, hand disinfectant, or hand sanitizer is a supplement or alternative to hand washing with soap and water. Many preparations are available, including gel, foam, and liquid solutions. The active ingredient in hand sanitizers may be isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol), ethanol, n-propanol, or povidone-iodine. Inactive ingredients in alcohol rubs typically include a thickening agent such as polyacrylic acid for alcohol gels, humectants such as glycerine for liquid rubs, propylene glycol, and

essential oils of plants. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are more effective at killing microorganisms than soaps and do not dry out hands as much. As microorganism are becoming resistant to present day antibiotics, our study focuses on antimicrobial activity and future prophylactic potential of the lemon peel. Biologically active compounds present in the medicinal plants have always been of great interest to scientists. The peel of citrus fruits is a rich source of flavones and many polymethoxylated flavones, which are very rare in other plants. These compounds, not only play an important physiological and ecological role, but are also of commercial interest because of their multitude of applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The citrus peel oils show strong antimicrobial activity. Hand hygiene is a vital principle and exercise in the prevention, control, and reduction of healthcare- acquired infections. Right hand washing and drying methods stop the chain of transmission of deadly pathogens (from the contaminated surface/site) form hands to other parts of the body. Hand sanitization is the preeminent aid in preventing nosocomial infections caused by different opportunistic microorganisms and to get this, the use of hand sanitizer becomes must in recent circumstances.

CHAPTER III Methodology Materials: The researcher will need the following materials in making a hand sanitizer: •

100 ml ethanol alcohol

½ cup of aloe vera gel

2 teaspoons of glycerine

1 whole orange

5 calamansi

Empty plastic bottle

Grater

Procedure: In this chapter, the researcher will be making a hand sanitizer out of materials that can be found easily and are cheap to buy. •

First, scrape the gel inside the aloe vera leaves.

After scraping the gel, add 100 ml of ethyl alcohol and 2 teaspoons of glycerine.

Next, grate the orange and calamansi to get the zest. Add it to the mixture, then mix till well blended.

Lastly, put the mixture inside an empty plastic bottlle.

CHAPTER V

Conclusion After conducting the experiment, the researcher therefore conclude that the citrofortunella hand sanitizer was definitely a success because of the ethyl alcohol’s presence that made it more disinfectant and the ingredients used to make the hand sanitizer were available and easily accessible in the market and stores.

Re Recommendation commendation After performing the experiment, the researcher further recommends the following: 1. The researcher recommended adding more aloe vera gel in order for the hand sanitizer to be more viscous. 2. The researcher recommended adding essential oil for the sake of your nose not to be irritated with the smell of the original essence. 3. The researcher recommended using the citrofortunella hand sanitizer than other artificial hand sanitizers. Since the citrofortunella hand sanitizer is composed of ingredients that have nutrients and benefits in them that is better rather than the other ingredients used in making the other artificial hand sanitizer. 4. The researcher recommended using food coloring for a better physical appearance, because most people would not tend to use gross looking products....
