2 Persuasive Communication in Personal Contexts To begin, an example of persuasive communication in personal context would be posting

on social media about my company who is looking to hire LPNs and RNs. The text of this situation is the social media post, and the speaker is myself because I am the one writing and posting the information. The audience are the friends on my social media specifically the nursing friends on the social media application. The purpose of this situation is to persuade social media friends to apply for a nursing position as my workplace. Finally, the context of this post is that my current place of employment needs nurses to come and work there. This example is effective because it has a key audience with a strong purpose. It uses a persuasive narrative to communicate the purpose of the post. The use of the positive word choices and tone draws the audience in and engages their attention about a good job opportunity. Persuasive Communication in Professional Context Moving onto professional context, an example of persuasive communication in professional context is receiving a new job offer letter. The text of this communication is a professional letter. The speaker of this communication is the hiring manager. The audience of this communication is myself as I am the one receiving the job offer. The purpose of this communication is to inform the audience (myself) of the job being offered with a brief description and information about the offered position. The context of this communication would provide the hiring manager with a confirmation about if I accepted the position or not. This example is effective because the professional tone and voice of this letter is written in provides the audience with a clear understanding about the purpose of the letter. It uses professional wording to establish the formality of the context being presented. The writer used professional

context in this letter to avoid any miscommunication or misinterpretation of the job being offered. Persuasive Communication in Academic Context Another type of context used in persuasive communication is academic context. An example of this would be an essay I wrote of a class. The essay that I wrote was about addressing the stigma about drug addiction within the healthcare field. I wrote this essay because after working in a hospital I found that many nurses had a negative attitude and disposition on having drug addicted patients. I personally have been touched by addiction my whole life with watching both of my parents, uncles, and aunts struggle with this disease. This text was an essay. The speaker was myself as I was the one writing the essay. The audience was my professor who would be reading and grading my essay. The purpose of the communication was to provide insight about how some nurses have stigma about drug addicts and how it affects the care they provide to these patients. The context of this communication is that nurses with negative attitudes about addiction treat these patients differently. This example is effective because situated knowledge was used in the essay from personal experience and knowledge about the topic. Also using part of the intercultural rhetoric, the story-behind-the-story was used in creation of the essay because nurses were asked about what issues do they have with drug addict and why they treat them the way they do (CM220M1, n.d.). Also use of patient verbal accounts were used in the essay to showcase their side of how they are treated within the healthcare system. Use of these components makes this essay an effective because it is proving readers with first-hand accounts of their opinions and treatment. Academic persuasion differs from personal and professional context because it is written following an instructor’s assignment with the goal to increase knowledge about a subject and demonstrate what the writer knows. Professional context is written to inform and provide information about an organization. It usually serves as a purpose to accomplish a change. Personal persuasion context differs because its context is from the writer’s point of view with personal feelings and experiences. Collaboration and Teamwork In order to communicate ideas effectively and ethically collaboration and teamwork are two very useful means of communication. When team members put forth their individual ideas, problems, or questions it can create a new set of ideas. As Steven Johnson stated in his TED Talk “Where Good Ideas Come From” a liquid network is the means of how these new innovated ideas come about. New ideas usually fade into view overtime and it’s crucial to connect the ideas of each individual of the team, then to protect them. When teamwork is utilized effectively it enhances collaboration and communication to accomplish the goal or task. An example that Steven Johnson spoke about how at a weekly lab meeting he observed how effective it was for

the team to meet and communicate not only their finding but the mistakes or issues they were having. This produced ideas to solve the issues that were occurring. When individuals collaborate, using their situated knowledge and applying the intercultural rhetoric it can produce option and outcomes.
