Informative Speech Number 1 Your first speech assignment is a short informative speech on a topic you have personal knowledge or experience of. It should be a topic that you already know enough about to be able to prepare a speech on it without doing additional research. Because you will not need to research your topic, you will be able to focus on organizing, preparing, and rehearsing your speech. Examples of appropriate topics include hobbies, interesting people that you have known, places you have lived or visited, and cultural traditions that you are familiar with.

This speech will be four to five minutes long. You do not need to use visual aids for this assignment, and I prefer that you not use Powerpoint slide shows or projected images. Feel free to use gestures or objects as visual aids. Your grade will be based on how well you organize your speech, and on your delivery. On the day that you present your speech you must submit a detailed preparation outline using the model found in the chapter in your textbook on Outlining the Speech. In the 12th edition of The Art of Public Speaking the example can be found on pages pp. 211-213. You should send this to me by e-mail at my Baruch e-mail address. You do not need to submit your speaking outline. Because this speech is based on your own personal knowledge and experience you do not need to provide a bibliography for this assignment. If a student’s speech is less than two and a half minutes long they will receive a grade of D or F for this assignment, depending on the content of the speech.
