Annotated Bibliography COM 213 Module 2 Activity Casey Garcia Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2018, September 14). Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Retrieved October 29, 2020, from https://www.cdc.gov/phlp/publications/topic/hipaa.html This source describes the HIPAA privacy rule, giving its origins dating back to 1996. It explains that HIPPA was created to provide a standard to protect sensitive patient information. This article is very descriptive and includes everyone that falls under HIPPA laws, including providers, office staff and insurance workers. This source is credible because it comes from a well-respected government agency, one that guides many aspects of a healthcare environment. This source is up to date and passes the C.R.A.P.P. test to be a reliable source. This source will be useful in my presentation because it gives a basic overview of the topic of HIPAA and will answer the most commonly asked questions. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. (2013, July 26). Summary of the HIPAA Privacy Rule. Retrieved October 29, 2020, from https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/forprofessionals/privacy/laws-regulations/index.html This source gives another overview of what HIPAA is, but the reason I chose it is because it gives a really in depth look at what types of information are protected under this law. It explains

that it applies to past, present, and future information, which is sometimes overlooked when talking about HIPAA. This credible source comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services which is again another trusted and respected government agency. I believe this will be a staple source in my presentation for several reasons, it will be another resource to use for my overview and definition of HIPAA, but it will be my main source to cover types of information. I will also use this source to reiterate the importance of not having personal conversations about patients even to family and friends. I feel that is a key issue that this article addresses very well. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. (2017, June 16). HIPAA for Professionals. Retrieved October 29, 2020, from https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/forprofessionals/index.html This article gives a timeline of the progression of HIPAA. From its conception in 1996 to the healthcare law we live by today. It shows how it went from a smaller regulation to becoming a national standard and eventually a privacy law. This is a credible source coming once again from the Department of Health and Human Resources. It is up to date and a reliable source of information. I will use this in my presentation by presenting this information in the form of a timeline photo. This will be a great visual to help keep my audience interested in what I am presenting. Limmroth, S. (2020). The Beginner HIPAA Professional’s Guide to Electronic Health Information Considerations. Journal of Health Care Compliance, 22(5), 49–64.

This source is taken from the Journal of Health Care Compliance. It explains the steps for healthcare officers to implement HIPAA into their workspaces. I believe this journal to be credible and reliable as it is written by Sheila Limmroth a legal services specialist that went to the University of Alabama and works for DCH Health systems. She is also certified in healthcare compliance by the HCCA (Healthcare Compliance Association). I will use this source to show the office professionals and providers listening to the presentation, how they can implement HIPAA successfully into their practices. HIPAA Journal. (2020, May 18). How Should You Respond to an Accidental HIPAA Violation? Retrieved November 07, 2020, from https://www.hipaajournal.com/accidental-hipaa -violation/ This article explains what to do in the instance of an accidental HIPAA violation. It teaches how every practice has an assigned HIPAA privacy officer and in the case of an accidental violation it should be reported to the privacy officer within the 60-day timeframe. Your superior and privacy officer must be informed of the privacy breach. This is a credible source as HIPAA Journal is verified by the government. This is a very important piece of information to include in the presentation, people will make mistakes and it is important for them to know what to do. I think it is important for them to know the proper proceedings without fear that will be fired over an accidental violation. Relias Media. (2020, September 1). HIPAA Compliance a Concern as Working from Home Becomes Norm. Retrieved October 29, 2020, From https://www.reliasmedia.com/articles/146679-hipaa-compliance-a-concern-as

-working-from-home-becomes-norm?v=preview This article explains how the COVID-19 pandemic has caused concerns about violating HIPAA. With so many people working from home including medical staff via telehealth and office workers doing patient check-in. There is concern for breech of patient information. I believe this source is credible coming from a fairly well known and trusted site. I think this source is not 100% reliable but since it is mostly hearsay as it is, I don’t find an issue with using it. I will use this in my presentation to show how HIPAA can be implemented even when working form home. I think this is a very applicable and timely source to use in my slides. HIPAA Journal. Why is HIPAA Important to Patients? (2018, March 08). Retrieved November 07, 2020, from https://www.hipaajournal.com/why-is-hipaa-important-patients/ This will be my last source explaining why HIPAA is so important for the patients. This article helps connect you to the patient creating empathy and knowing that we will all be a patient at some point in our lives, we want to know our information is being protected. Once again, this source is from HIPAA Journal which is government verified. I feel this will be the perfect way to end my presentation, in the healthcare field we are there to serve the patient. I feel it is important to remember that at the end of the day that is why we are working in this field, and what better way to help our patients that to protect their information and identity....
