(3 marks) Walthausen claims that lecturing is a highly valuable method of education and should not be pushed out of educational planning, even though some professionals nowadays are distancing themselves from this method in favour of more group-oriented, project-based education.
3. Considering the author’s purpose, write down the most important IDEAS followed by their respective supporting details given by the author. Number them clearly. (20 marks) 1) Lecturing is a very valuable method of education, as supported by the following
arguments:
a) Scwerdt and Wupperman (2010) conducted comparative research on lecture-based classes vs. other types of in-class learning activities. The study has shown that students who participate in more lecture-based classes learned more than their peers doing other sorts of learning activities. b) Walthausen considers lecture-based classes more democratic because students can take notes which may be useful for contributing with group discussions, rather than… c) …feeling “clueless” which may impact negatively a student’s performance, as pointed out by Burgan. Furthermore, she affirms that lecturers are role models of “knowledgeable adults” for students.
2) Some education professionals are trying to distance themselves from lecturing and
focusing on group-oriented, project-based education, as supported by the following arguments: a) The most recent New York’s Department of Education planning reduces lecturing talk for professors and increases group project time. b) Paulo Freire (1970) describes the lecturer as “an arrogant imperialist”. c) David Thornburg affirms that lectures worsened his learning experience during high school. d) Walthausen argues that professionals from the “Common Core” consider lecturers to be “out-of-touch experts”....
