Global Trumpism: Why Trump’s Victory Was 30 Years in the Making and Why It Won’t Stop Here In a recent article published in Foreign Affairs ‘Global Trumpism’, Mark Blyth explains what chain of events has predetermined an election of Donald Trump and how it lead to the colossal shift in globe politics. Trumpism, which is the central point of the article as the heading provides us a with a hint, is the policy advocated by Donald Trump, involving a rejection of the current political establishment and the vigorous pursuit of national interests. Blyth expresses deep concerns about current dynamics in politics, as he provides numerous examples of the crisis evident in Western countries. The core of an issue, from his perspective, is an expanding division between right and left parties, which pull over the majority of vote shares; that is direct threat to existence of centrists’ parties, which used to be buffer between two extremes. Why does this happen? ‘Global Trumpism’ article suggests an answer observing the historic background, namely the economy of Western countries in two periods. As United States and its allies put all afford in elimination of unemployment after the World War II, debtors’ paradise flourished in that countries. In response, a market-friendly revolution, which aimed price stability, was funded in the middle of 80’s by creditors and employers, who incurred losses during the debtors’ paradise. That was the beginning of the era of neoliberalism. Inflation policy target had actually worked for the following thirty years, so the value of debt was restored; central banks started governing state economy, setting restrictive legislation that undermined an ability of employees to push up wages, resulting in creditors’ paradise. However, in the current global economy, even huge amount of money cannot create any kind of inflation, so that deflation can become our new normal.

In the world of

disinflation, the value of debt increases, whereas the ability to pay off those debts decreases. Center-right and center-left parties are portrayed as those ‘demanding repayment in already unequal system’, that is why centrists are losing vote shares and insurgent right and left parties dominate, i.e. driven by revolt against elite and economy itself voters opt for right or left extremes, undermining the influence of centrists and increasing the chances of clashes. As we are on the edge of the new era of neonationalism, the article ‘Global Trumpism’ is more like a warning to the readers about upcoming global changes. 1
