2. SWOT Analysis 2.1 Strengths 1.

Noticeable R&D Capabilities Founded in 1997, HTC recruited a group of computer software and hardware designers from Digital, which was acquired by Compaq, in 1998. In the early years, HTC was mainly a contract manufacturer for international PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) branded vendors, establishing a solid relationship with OS (Operating System) developer Microsoft while building up considerable technology strength on the Windows CE platform. In 2002, with high market potential expected from PDA phones also known as Smartphones - HTC launched the world's first Smartphone that runs on Microsoft Pocket PC Phone Edition. Taking the advantage of being a forerunner, HTC obtained numerous orders from European telecom operators, thereby helping the company build up technology innovation strength through production scale expansion. In addition to its hardware development capabilities, HTC also has set foot in software applications such that the design of UI (User Interface) - including TouchFLO in 2007, TouchFLO 3D in 2008, and Sense in 2010 - all received good market acceptance. In particular, HTC's Hero, which was unveiled in 2009, was awarded by GSMA as the mobile phone of the year in the 2010 MWC (Mobile World Congress). Currently HTC has up to 4,000 staff in its R&D team. HTC's production has extended from PDAs, PDA phones to Smartphones and has grasped several key component technologies such as application processors, panels, and compact cameras. Compared to its competitors, HTC has capabilities in hardware architecture design and component integration, giving HTC a great advantage to develop slim and lightweight products with smooth user experience.

2.

Close Tie-up with IC Chipmakers and Leading OS Developers Being one of the few contract manufacturers to first enter the Smartphone segment, HTC has been considered as a prioritized partner by leading IC chipmakers such as Qualcomm and Texas Instruments as well as OS developers like Microsoft and Google. For example, HTC is the world's first vendor to launch Smartphones equipped with Microsoft Windows Mobile. In addition, when Google launched Android OS in 2007, HTC was also the first to join hands with Google to unveil corresponding products. Owing to its close tie-up with upst...
