CONCEPT MAP Disease Process/Concept: Fire- RACE - Pages. 387,406, 407 Pathophysiology/ (What is this?): Is part of the intervention guidelines to keep the patients safe.
Signs and Symptoms/ (Why do I do this?): For the safety of the patient in health care agency and at home. Safety for patients and staff working in the facility.
Treatments and Medication: (How do I treat this?): Health care agencies have routine fire drills to measure staff responsiveness and understanding of fire safety protocols. R-rescue and remove all patients in immediate danger. A-active the alarm. C-confine the fire by closing doors and windows and turning off oxygen and electrical equipment. E-extinguish the fire with an appropriate extinguisher. Memorized mnemonic PASS: P-pull the pin to unlock handle A-aim low at the base of the fire
S-squeeze the handles S-sweep the unit from side to side. Diagnostic and Labs/ (When do I do This?): In the event of a fire keep equipment from blocking the doors. Patients that cannot move because they are in a bed, need to be taken out by stretchers or a wheelchair Nursing Interventions/ (How do I do this?): -Always keep the phone number for reporting visible fires. -Know the fire drill and evacuation plan of the agency. -Know the locations of all fire alarms, exits, extinguishers and oxygen shut off in your work area. -Use RACE to set priorities in case of a fires.
Patient Education: -Teaching patient strategies for home. -Use the principles of teach-back to evaluate patient.
