Film Study Worksheet: “Contagion”

While watching the film “Contagion” think about the following questions and record your responses. Responses will be due on Friday December 7 2018 by 5:00PM. You will need to upload a PDF document of this worksheet to Moodle for it to be graded. You may receive up to 5 bonus points for completing this activity and attending the movie and panel discussion.

1. Explain five scientific facts mentioned in the film that we discussed in class. Were the facts scientifically accurate? 1-R naught, how many cases does one case generate, accurate. 2- Biosafety 4 level laboratory, full hazmat suits with air tubes, accurate. 3- Live attenuated virus vaccination, and testing on animals. accurate. 4- lock and key attachment mechanisim of the virus to the receptor, very accurate. 5- Bat and pig virus recombination through antigenic shift, accurate.

2. Describe any aspect of the film that showed you something you hadn’t seen/known before, caused you to think in a new way, or helped you understand something more thoroughly than before. In addition, describe how it changed your thinking. How fast a novel and deadly virus can spread and send society into anarchy. I thought that it was easier to quarintine and isolate individuals but the movie showed it to be extremely difficult. 3. Was there anything that you saw, or heard, in the film that was unconvincing, or seemed out of place? 1- That when they found out the dad was immune to the virus, they didn’t study him or look into what made him immune to the virus. Even if its expensive, the world was going into anarchy and all efforts should have been put into researching for a cure. 2- If the dad is immune he can still be a carrier and the daughter would have been exposed the whole time. Immune does not mean he cant carry the virus. it just means the virus's © Adapted from TeachWithMovies.com Licensed pursuant to http://www.teachwithmovies.org/terms-of-use.html

pathogenisty is distrupted by something unique to him. 4. What particularly appealed to you in the cinematic presentation of the film, such as the way in which particular scenes, images, or sounds were presented? I liked the emphasis on objects that come into contact with infected pateints. 5. If the filmmakers were to ask you how the film could be improved scientifically, what would you tell them? Describe the changes you would suggest in detail and the reasons for your suggestion. To show in more detail how the vaccine was made, it only breifly went over that someone was working on a vaccine and then all of the sudden it was finished and being fulling manufactured. I believe that one persons work can be significant in making a vaccine but teams of physicians and scientists work on testing and producing them not one person. 6. If someone asked if you would recommend this film, how would you respond? Fully explain your reasons. Yes, i would definetly reccomned the film. It incorporated correct scientific termenology and facts while at the same time showing what a real life epidemic looks like.
