Contraindications to Heat Therapy 1. Impaired cutaneous thermal sensation 2. Defective arterial cutaneous circulation 3. Patients with a low level of consciousness 4. Acute skin disease – dermatitis or eczema 5. Deep X-ray therapy\ 6. Patients with defective blood pressure regulation 7. Acute febrile illness 8. Tumours of the skin 9. Active deep vein thrombosis

Hazards / Contraindications TENS is generally a very safe modality. Do not use TENS on people who have the following:

• Pacemakers • Heart disease or dysrhythmias • Undiagnosed pain • Epilepsy • In the first three months of pregnancy Do not use on the following area: • • • • • •

The mouth The carotid sinus Broken skin Anaesthetic skin The abdomen during pregnancy Near the eyes

But an obstetric TENS is used during labour as a strong analgesia. Contraindications and Precautions to NMES • • • • • • • • • • •

Patient fitted with demand style pacemaker. During pregnancy. Patients with undiagnosed pain conditions. Patients with peripheral vascular disease. Patients who cannot understand the instructions. Neoplastic tissue. Devitalised skin – after deep x-ray therapy. Do not drive a vehicle whilst attached to a NMES Skin irritation may occur – check skin thoroughly Only use NMES for what you have been prescribed Do not immerse in water



Do not place the electrodes: - Over the carotid sinus - Over larynx or trachea - Inside the mouth - On anaesthetised skin

CONTRAINDICATIONS OF ULTRASOUND Acute Sepsis Tumours Deep X-ray therapy Local infections Vascular insufficiency Active TB Metal implants Pacemakers Central nervous tissue Uncontrolled bleeding or anti-coagulant therapy Over the eyes, reproductive organs or a pregnant uterus PRECAUTIONS Acute inflammation

Epiphyseal growth plates Decreased sensation
