Indications & Contraindications Indications ● ●

In pregnancy GI tract motility is slowed because of progesterone, resulting in increased reabsorption of water and drying of stool. Intestines are compressed by the enlarging uterus, and iron supplementation may be a factor as well.

Assess color, consistency, and amount of stool produced.

Implementation ● ● ● ●

Colace does not stimulate intestinal peristalsis; stimulant laxatives may be required for constipation PO: Administer with a full glass of water or juice. May be administered on an empty stomach for faster results Do not administer within 2 hours of other laxatives, especially mineral oil. May cause increased absorption.

Client Education ● ● ● ● ● ●

Laxatives should only be for short term use. Long term therapy may cause electrolyte imbalance and dependence. Encourage patients to use other forms of bowel regulation such as increasing fiber in the diet, increasing fluid intake, and increasing mobility. Patients with cardiac conditions should not perform the Valsalva maneuver. Do not take stool softeners without a doctor’s order. Maintain a regular schedule for bowel movements Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day.

Interactions ● ● ●

Additive hypokalemia with loop or thiazide diuretics. Increased risk of GI effects with NSAID use. May require an increase requirement of insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents.
