Netflix Documentary: The Social Dilemma

1. Were there particular moments in the film that resonated with your experience? The fact that I had a really hard time not constantly picking up my phone, how the biggest companies were using my data for advertising purposes, and that social media and filters were changing beauty standards 2. The film highlights how social media distorts our view of ourselves, our relationships, and our broader reality. Have you experienced that distortion, if so how? I have seen pictures of people on social media with better appearances than me and even though the picture is edited, I still compare myself to that. I have seen it in my relationships with people because the good things are the ones that are always posted and sometimes my relationships with my family are a little distant. 3. In the film, the case is made that human willpower can’t be expected to compete with some of the most sophisticated AI on the planet. What can we do to develop healthy relationships with technology? We can learn how to limit how it permeates into our lives. We can also set time limits and additional restrictions to make sure that our willpower isn’t weaker than AI. We should be controlling how tech affects us, it should not be out of our control. 4. How can we make sure that other families, teachers, and school leadership understand these issues?

We can talk about it with the people that we know and try to help them understand that technology has trickled into their lives and is a negative influence in certain parts of their lives and it should be eradicated 5. What were (are) the 3 main goals for social media? Increasing engagement, growing users, tailoring advertisements 6. Discuss this quotation: “Only drug dealers and software companies call their customers ‘users’” – Edward Tufte This quote is accurate because customers of software don’t buy it once and leave it, they are regular customers and they will keep coming back for more so when you have someone who habitually returns back to you for a certain product, they are now your user. 7. Is unconscious manipulation of the consumer any different from regular marketing and advertising? It is different from regular market and advertising because these were things that came from external sources such as billboards, television, and magazines and they would appear to everyone but now that the consumer is being manipulated and certain products are being advertised to certain people, it is much more different. 8. Does your country have a problem with ‘fake news’? Have you experienced fake news yourself? America has a big problem with fake news because

people are more inclined to consume media that agrees with their ideals, whether it is accurate or not. I have experienced it before when Kamala Harris introduced a bill to keep schools open 3 hours longer when this was intended for childcare purposes, it was fed to me in a way that implied that this would be class time. 9. Do you feel the society you live in has become more and more polarized? It has become more polarized because there isn’t much of a respect for people’s opinions and many people are radical in what they believe and aren’t willing to consider the other side, even though the other side may be more factual 10. With all of the filters/angles/lighting how is it possible to actually trust the person you “think” you are talking to? I mean sometimes, it’s pretty obvious to know who you’re talking to online if it’s a video chat or a facetime but who they are online is not who they are in person. They can also hide a lot of their facial features so they appear more attractive and filters can modify facial structures so they’re not really accurate 11. Have you ever taken down a post because you don’t think you received enough “likes”? Why or why not. I mean I don’t really post on instagram but I still feel like I would because I like validation from a big audience and if I didn’t get the attention or validation I was expecting, I would just take it as an all or nothing
