Social Dilemma:

Customers are increasingly turning to social networking sites for information on various products and services, rather than relying on traditional media such as television, radio, and periodicals. 1Since the internet is seen as the new frontier for conducting business, everyone around the world, whether individual or collective, is gradually recognizing the value of social media in the workplace. It provides businesses with a platform to reach a larger audience while avoiding issues like time, availability, accessibility, and distance. The industry is expanding at a breakneck pace. The term "social" refers to engaging with other people for the purpose of exchanging information and is defined by amicable companionship or relationships, while the terms ‘media' refers to any kind of communication that reaches a large number of people, such as radios, television, newspapers, magazines, and the internet. Basically, ‘Social media is a web-based social communication tool that enables individuals to share and consume information with one another. Accordingly, "social media" refers to "activities, practices, and behaviors among groups of individuals who congregate online to share and exchange information, knowledge, and ideas using communicational means.".2 Accordingly, it is a connection of people who exchange ideas and opinions, as described by Tim Berners-Lee, Facebook, for example, is a free social networking microblogging site that allows registered users to broadcast and follow brief messages. At present, Facebook is one of the means for online business. With roughly 2.89 billion monthly active users as of the second quarter of 2021, Facebook is the biggest social network worldwide3. Since the creation of the Internet, businesses have utilized it as a means of attracting new consumers and boosting income, but the rise of social networking websites has altered the way businesses promote online. Businesses could no longer just put an ad on a website and wait; they needed to be more involved, which posed a whole new set of challenges for social media advertising. With a large number of users on social media platforms, marketers and businesses alike are encouraged to participate. An advertisement on a major website may reach a vast audience for a minimal cost, putting it at the forefront of business decision-making. In today's world, almost every big or small business has a social media presence. Either old or new businesses are aggressively utilizing social networking sites to market their products and services, as well as to obtain vital feedback from their consumers. In fact, social media contact has virtually become the de-facto benchmark for evaluating a company's customer service. Businesses employ a variety of marketing strategies to target the proper audience, engage in consumer online brand activities, and spread the electronic word of mouth. Given its prominence, let us examine the impact of social media on online business by highlighting the benefits of adopting it as an online business platform. According Arsath4 the major benefits of social media marketing in 2018 are cost reduction and increased reach. A social media platform is usually less expensive than traditional marketing channels like face-to-face salespeople, intermediaries, or wholesalers. In addition, social media marketing allows firms to reach customers that may not be accessible due to the temporal and locational limitations of existing distribution channels.

Many businesses utilize social media, according to Singh and Sinha5 , who performed study on "The Impact of Social Media on Business Growth and Performance in India." Furthermore, they rely on conventional media to advertise their products and stay in touch with their consumers. They went on to say that, unlike conventional media, social media has the capacity to reach a large number of clients and better satisfy their unique demands. These findings demonstrate that social media may help businesses execute their jobs more effectively and efficiently now, and that it has the potential to develop creative techniques that can help firms function more quickly in previously repetitive situations. Despite the fact that these social media platforms for online sellers and online businesses provide a great contribution to the improvement and development of business, these platforms have a negative implication not just to consumers but also to the business owner. Many of the major social media companies hire individuals called attention engineers. According to Conger6 , Attention engineering is the product of two recent historical developments: marketing and the internet. Attention engineering is exacerbated by social media and news outlets and has applications in the emerging security environment for influencing adversary decision-making. This type of engineering is much like that which a civil engineer uses to design a bridge. It starts with understanding the forces at work in this case, the psychological drivers of human cognition and decision-making (Armstrong, 2019)7 Wherein, they barrow principles from Las Vegas Casino gambling among another place to try these products as addictive as possible that is the desired use of these engineer to maximizes the profit that can be extracted from your attention and data. 8 Social Media tools are desired to be addictive, the actual design desired use case of these tools is that you fragment you attention as much as possible throughout your waking hours and that’s how these tools are designed to used. According to Price9 , Many of these attentioncapturing tricks harness our brain’s dopamine system. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is at the heart of all of our habits. “Dopamine is our brain’s way of recording what’s worth doing again,” explains Ramsay Brown, co-founder and chief operations officer at Boundless Mind, a tech start-up that uses our brain’s dopamine system to nudge us toward behaviors that we actually want to engage in. “It’s how we learn from our positive experiences.”. In connections to attention engineers and dopamine to online business and selling, this might be a great contribution to the online world or the seller since it would be beneficials. However, it would affect consumers by manipulating them and through a psychological effect that we need to address. So basically, despite the great contribution of these social media in the sphere of business, there are some countries take an initiative in order to protect their data to be used and manipulate by some other people by addicting them. India is a major market for Chinese apps which are on banned list. (Chinese banned app, 2020)10 There are many reasons for the ban of Chinese apps in India. Ban has affected Video 5

Makers, fashion bloggers. It hurt many of Indians who were making money and business connections through these apps. It hurt many of Indians who were making money and business connections through these apps. It also affected Indian traders and businessman11. Accordingly, the central government claimed that these apps were stealing data and transferring data to servers which are located outside India12 The IT ministry said that the centre has banned 59 apps of China to safeguard Indian cyberspace and to make sure that the safety, sovereignty, integrity, defense and public order of India were protected. The Ministry of Eloctronics and IT said that it had got complaints from different sources 13 Governments have a legitimate interest in maintaining public order and national security for their people, and they have a duty to do so. However, any action restricting free expression or association in order to attain such goals must be exceptional, legal, and strictly required and reasonable to achieve a legitimate goal. An Internet shutdown is an intentional disruption of Internet-based communications, rendering them inaccessible or effectively unavailable, for a specific population, location, or mode of access, often to exert control over the flow of information. (KeepItOn, 2020). Governments are increasingly using internet shutdowns to stifle discussion, organize online, and disseminate information. Zimbabwe, China, Myanmar, Chad, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and India are among the nations that have experienced internet outages. When traveling to China, Foreigners can expect to say goodbye to their favorite social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google, and WhatsApp are all prohibited. The crackdown was aimed at curtailing communications among independence activists. 14 in addition, by protecting their data, they are also protecting their people from being manipulated since we are live in this era wherein technology is destructive in our future. The majority of individuals mistakenly believe that their social media usage is “free.” That is, we think that after we've paid for the internet, it won't cost us more as we consume more material. However, as media platform owners and marketers will confirm, this is far from the case. Social media sites are unlikely to modify their methods on their own as long as they continue to generate money by selling our attention. According to Alter, there is an arms race for attention. “And you'll be left behind if you don't use every option at your disposal to entice customers. Here is the real thing. The world we live in is not real, personally, when we look at the younger generations, which is the most saturated in this technology. If you lose your ability to sustain concentration, you are going to become less relevant to this economy. It is a wakeup call for everybody that consumers are being attack and we must not take it for granted. We may thing that social media as a means of online selling and business is not harmless then we are wrong. Everything has a consequence and we have to face the reality. We cannot eradicate social media in our daily lives particularly in the sphere of business since it has a great contribution but one thing that the government can do is to regulate the use of it. 11
