“The Social Dilemma” Compare & Contrast Skyler Stevens Clayton Rosati MDIA 1030 10/8/2021

In the Netflix-produced film "The Social Dilemma" are interviewed many people who work in the industry, including people from platforms like Facebook, Google, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, and similar companies. In "The Facebook Dilemma," Frontline and PBS focus on individuals who work for Facebook. During the Social Dilemma, whistleblowers bring us attention to things they've tried to conceal. The Facebook Dilemma looks at social media platforms' control over U.S. democracy and privacy. I will go into further detail in the arguments of the films. Here are some of the big topics the films deal with. The main argument of the Social Dilemma is how social media is destroying our lives. The main argument in the Facebook Dilemma, they are slow to realize the ways in which Facebook can be misused. By selling people's information to third parties, "moving fast and breaking things", engaging, growing, advertising, and manipulating, persuading, and addiction, these arguments are similar. The arguments are different by the year it was made, one in 2018 and another in 2020. I pick out evidence that backs up their arguments. Both documentaries have similar types of evidence that was used to build their arguments. Congressional hearing clips and media effects research statistics were included in the Social Dilemma. It was made clear through such evidence that separation and obsessive behavior are not an abnormality but were planned. The Facebook Dilemma uses research statistics of news feed, algorithms, and fake news. You could tell that they really utilize algorithms to produce interesting content in the news feed which includes not accurate information. They lead to impacts and implications in democracy. Social Dilemma impacts negatively on mental health, politics, and regulating these industries. An interview with Sandy portrays them as a sort of de facto government. News reporters talk about politics in Europe, Italy, and Spain. As with the Facebook dilemma, the social impacts cannot hold them accountable, no regulation, and no implications of problems. You get interesting content from algorithms, says Mark Zuckerberg. In an interview, Naomi Gleit says Mark has stated that Facebook has been too slow to understand ways it might be misused. The site is being policed by what Sparapani says are common sense and integrity. Their problems are both related to the social impact of democracy, though they talk about similar things we did in class. Cultural conflicts, social media noise, and fake news are all gaps that the films fill in class work. My personal interests with the films are realizing the problem with social media and limiting my usage. I gained insights into the information society while watching these movies not covered in readings: using algorithms to create content, wanting our data and doing anything to get it, and political polarization. One scene that was effective which made an impact on me was the brother who tried to stay off his phone but failed and got addicted to it which made him miss commits. It would be good as a model for the final project because this is something that the world is facing today with even younger people. Second scene that was effective was their interactions with the protests. This would be an excellent model for the final project because there is lots of coverage over different protests. Social media is designed not to be regulated and addictive. It is an health concern for younger people. It focuses more on the positives than negatives. Their methods help their growth and profit, not privacy. They aren’t doing a lot to improve issues....
