Reaction Paper

The Social Dilemma Watching the movie was an eye opener for every person who would watch it because it tackles about the current problem that the users of social media have right now, and it’s something that really do affect our different aspects in life. We all have fallen into this trap of business model that the social media has been constantly offering to us. Having a continuous supply of recommendations that aims to seduce every user’s minds, thus, affecting not just our mental health, but also our daily hobbies and routine that we usually do. That being said, is a serious concern considering that the rise of these social media platforms have brought an addicting drug especially to the new generations. In line with that, the fake reality that we have perceived in this virtual world gave a rise to major cases of suicides due to depression. What is this fake reality? For example having those numbers of likes in Facebook, favorites in twitter, numbers of shares and impressions have gotten through the minds of the users, hence, perceiving it as their own form of reality. Perceiving those models as form of reality, it has affected their psychological analysis. They thought that having small numbers of likes and small impressions is their worth. So what do they do so that the social friends they made in those platforms would like them? They switch to faking their own reality. Using any means to make their selves look better in the virtual world, even if it’s not what they actually are. After watching the movie, It really is something that we could relate to the kind of world that we have now. Aside from it affecting the mental health of the users, it is also something that gave rise to people on using conspiracy theories, fake news, social propagandas, among others who just wants to seek attention but has brought that means of dividing the world. People having different beliefs from the others, thus, not being able to understand one another. What is the main cause of it? The business model of social media platforms, because every users are being offered a different

interface or recommendations depending on your daily lifestyle, matching your interests depending on your searches. That being said, is actually pretty scary because if someone is really addicted to using social media, even all of their data and information is publicly displayed on their accounts, it could be pretty harmful, especially now that we are in the world of IOT and the number of hackers have gotten pretty big. Aside from that, what makes if harmful is the constant seducement. The platform would keep track of your daily habits and then constantly pouring you out with these different kinds of recommendations which is a temptation to be checked. Hence, wasting a lot of time which could have been used to a productive one. After watching the movie, I think the people should not get this wrong, because in the first place, it was never the developer’s intention to have brought that kind of curse or dilemma. It was not the platform’s fault. It was the business model of that platform. Having our social media platforms is really helpful. It has connected lives of millions of people. But, I totally agree with the person who have started the humane technology, (I seem to have forgotten the name). Because, the social media could be really great if that is put into good use, and destroy their current business model that gets people on being their products and having constant recommendations and amusements. This is only my opinion but, if this current business model of those social media platforms goes on, it could really be pretty scary....
