The demographics of the U.S.A. are rapidly changing. Schools across the country are becoming increasingly more multicultural. Just like how you cannot use one learning style for all students, you can’t approach your lesson from only the perspective of your race or culture. In order to work with students who differ culturally or linguistically, you must be sensitive with your instructional practices. 5 themes/elements for culturally relevant pedagogy: o 1. Identity and achievement o 2. Equity and excellence o 3. Developmental appropriateness o 4. Teaching the whole child o 5. Student-teacher relationships Identity and achievement takes the identity of both teacher and student. The home cultures of your students should be acknowledged, valued and used as a tool for learning. To achieve equity and excellence in the classroom, you must provide what each student needs to receive in order to understand the concepts presented. There must be an emphasis on the students’ different learning needs. As a teacher, you must make the distinction and judgement call of what is considered culturally appropriate for a classroom full of students with diverse backgrounds. Teaching the whole child is similar to developmental appropriateness. You must establish a connection to a supportive learning community by focusing on school, home, and community collaboration. Develop a classroom atmosphere that

communicates and focus on the idea of genuine concern for students. You have to implement effective interactions between yourself and the student as well as you to the parents. Summary of Notes (1-2 sentences) In 2017, in order to act as an effective educator you must be sensitive about race and truly understand the differences it makes in the classroom. You must address the differences in race, culture and religion to your class even it is seen as awkward. It helps establish a dialogue about race and also provides an example of how to communicate about diversity in a positive and comfortable way. Make sure to foster an atmosphere of love and understanding in your classroom so that student’s feel comfortable not just being themselves, but being different from others. Lastly, celebrate differences. That is the beauty of the human race and America, itself....
