In addition to his official function as treasurer, he was in charge of organizing the concerts and selecting the singers, with Raton, his inseparable associate. Using very personal criteria, Medard determined the applicants’ motivations and their ability to comit. “You don’t sing with the Celestins because it is raining outside”, he often said. Everybody called him Medard, after the saint, because he used to work at the national weather service. As for Raton, the administrator, one glance was enough to understand why she was called like that. Jean has worn Nouche: Medard and his little rat were an odd couple. They were fighting all the time but their relation was still eternal. They spent their time arguing with each other without this altering the stability of their relation. They seemed to be attached, linked by an invisible wire, and they gave the impression of being doomed to flee each other forever. Not a gesture, not a word, could make this curse sweeter....
