Creative Influence Summary I Paul Nicholson: U.K. based Graphic Designer who also goes by “Number 3” (#III) I first saw Paul’s work when I found Aphex Twins music as a teenager. When I found this music for the first time felt so weird because I had never seen or heard anything like this before and it made me really think that what I was listening to was not of this planet. It kinda turned me off on the whole concept because it was just too weird and scary. Now over 10 years later and I still haven't ever really felt like that again with finding music. I eventually started listening to more and more of Aphex’s music and getting into more of Paul’s work when I started to notice that nothing was really like that and how creative this content really was. Now I listen to Aphex almost every day and have become so into Paul’s work that they are both definitely have become my main creative influences. Paul has produced so much work and it’s all so fresh and unique that everything he makes feels like you're discovering an artifact from the future. I’ve been trying to study more of Paul’s work since I started designing because nothing has consistently stuck out to me as much as his work. Paul is always using angles and simple shapes to build his fonts and logos. For example, the Aphex Twin logo was drawn by hand in 1991 and is also a typeface that Paul created called Xylem. Xylem is a systematically formulated font that is harmoniously modulated from 4 different sized circles into something that, even today, feels like you're reading a different language. His creativeness was and is still so ahead of its time and that's what makes him such a significant influence to me. I've started to connect his consistent theme of construction from his formulations that construct his fonts, to the aesthetic of his website always involving shipping containers and safety signs. It really becomes clear how creatively he uses shapes with using the same tools as anyone else and can yet bring something completely different to the world of design Paul did an amazing AMA on Reddit 2 years ago that answers a lot of questions: https://www.reddit.com/r/aphextwin/comments/guqc3j/i_am_paul_nicholson_creative_designer_and_the/?sort=qa
